Help With Pitman Shaft Seal

Help I just got my lower pitman shaft seal kit for a 1990 gmc K1500 and it contains a snap ring two seals and two washers.

My truck has a large rubber grommet on it but it is not shown in the instructions which don't show any grommet at all.

Anybody know what that grommet is called or a part number?

Re: Help With Pitman Shaft Seal

Is it possible the two washer and two seals with the snap ring are a upgrade replacement for the large rubber grommet?

From outside to inside...

Snap ring, washer, thicker seal, washer, thinner seal.

Thats exactly what they sold me.
Does it replace the original style tall rubber?

Re: Help With Pitman Shaft Seal

Back from the dead...
My truck's box (reman from Lares, '86 C10 unit) went nut & washer --> pitman --> grommet--> snap ring--> washer -->seal -->needle bearings.
The seal kit listed for this box is always PSK-1, which is a two-seal kit.
I looked up the part number for the single seal and it is listed as the "lower" seal (shorter of the two) in the PSK-1 kit.
There is no room under the snap ring for the second seal.
Anyone run into this, know what could be going on here? The seal I took out had under 150 miles on it and leaked like a sieve. I did use Dextron instead of PS fluid, which I won't do again, but I don't want to put the box back in the truck until I'm confident of the story.

Re: Help With Pitman Shaft Seal

On my 1980 Saginaw box I removed the nut ..pitman arm..snap ring..I drilled two holes in the lower seal to pull out with pliers .I think a washer was next and then the upper seal. After reading up on this removal it was suggested to power up the engine and turn the steering wheel a few times right and left and the built up pressure will blow the seal out at least enough so you can get a hold of it. Worked for me. Remember not to lose your steering wheel original position after side to side movements Anyway..two seals .one thicker than the other and two steel washers.

After re-reading what I wrote if you dis-connect the pitman arm from the pitman arm shaft, turning the steering wheel has no effect since dis-connected. I think just starting up the engine puts pressure in the pump and pushes out the seal.
