NJ question on Certificate of Title from Ca.

I am going to NJDMV to transfer ownership to my name ( get a NJ title) do i need to put the odometer reading on the Ca. Title and sign it in the box labeled transferee /buyer signatures or leave it blank was the seller supposed to do that..i have another title to another truck from Ca. and the seller never filled that part out either. so i am wondering do i need the sellers signature there or do i leave it blank . I know new jersey will ask me on their form to verify the miles anybody familiar with this or have transferred ownership of a Ca. title in NJ I have done numerous with other states not Ca. PIC OF TITLE ENCLOSED ....do you guys from Ca. normally fill out the Odometer portion or is it the buyers obligation is the question

In Calif, seller and buyer both sign and date. Don't know what NJ wants but it would seem reasonable to have the same requirement, practice your signature(s)

I never dealt with California, but it should work like any out of state title. Seller signed off, then you sign as buyer and write in the mileage.

My truck came from PA and it was very easy. In my case the sales receipt and the title were signed by 2 different people since the guy I bought it from had never titled the truck. NJ didn't care at all, took me 20 minutes at the DMV and hand over a check to get title, registration, and plates.

Jess I would think that the mileage portion is more of a inside CA thing and NJDMV wont even look at this part of the title. When you apply for the NJ title they will ask the mileage to put on the NJ title and that is it.

In CA we fill in the mileage portion of the title.

I'm not sure if it's required for out of state buyers.

I usually check the "mileage exceeds mechanical odometer limits" box

California does not require the mileage after 25 years of age, for the vehicle age that is.

im thinking like your thinkin I have transferred none from Ca.a lot of titles in my day im gonna go with that part blank tell them thats a inside Ca. thing and do the odometer cert on the NJ form worse i could do is have to come home and practice signin LOLim with Lattimer/Shawn I have had some good luck with NJDMV must be my honest old face THANKS to all for their input/advice

Just say that the law offices of Acemang and Company have informed you that vehicles over 25 years old are exempt from the odometer statement on the title.

Or you could just print this out

not 100% sure on the 25-years but ive never had a problem leaving the odo blank and checking the "exceeds limit" box for trucks this old.

That is just the thing. NJDMV is famous (infamous?) for being a bit problematic. When they look at Zicc's CA title and see a field that is not filled out and signed, they may just send him packing.

seller signed in 1a, as required. You should fill in the mileage, whatever it is, and check "exceeds mechanical limit of odometer" or whatever the box says. Then you sign. Take it to DMV and do title transfer. There is nothing wrong with entering the mileage and stating it exceeds. if, for some reason you really don't want to do that, and I can't imagine why, then you can HOPE that NJDMV follows the same rule that CA does - it is a 10 year limit, not 25. After 10 yrs, odo reporting is not mandatory. I'd fill it out, don't give dmv anything to wank about.
