exhaust setup on sbc

Im running a 350 sbc with mild cam on a s10 swapped 53 3100. I got a set of shorty headers and am trying to decide what exhaust setup to run. Ive thought about running headers back to a single thrush turbo 2.5" in/out muffler and then to rear of truck but ive noticed alot of guys running dual exhaust with x-pipe or dual in/out muffler. Im not looking for the max performance but i do want the truck to sound good and not too loud with the popping when decel which ive noticed alot more with glasspacks.

Re: exhaust setup on sbc

I ran dual 2" to glass packs and it dumps right in front of the rear axle. I get no popping on deceleration at all. It is a little loud but then again my engine has a really lumpity cam in it too. It is almost like having straight pipes, alot depends on how you install the glass packs or which direction you install them.

Re: exhaust setup on sbc

I am the odd fellow that doesn't believe a (little) 350 needs duals.
I am happy with my 2-into-1 using a 3" system.

It isn't all that quiet...wife says she knows it is me coming from a block away.
The tone is on the deeper side.
I like the sound and I like that both headers are keeping the system drier during short drives.
I looked for my photos from underneath, but Photobucket seems to have eaten them!

Re: exhaust setup on sbc

Would a 2.25/2.25 to 3" ypipe into a single 3" in/out muffler be the same as the dual in single out? And what muffler are you running?

Re: exhaust setup on sbc

Did you dump it after muffler or run to rear over axle?

Re: exhaust setup on sbc

I ran 2.5" pipe through dual Magnaflow mufflers and dumped it in front of the rear tires with some 4" tips

Re: exhaust setup on sbc

I have always ran 2" rams horn exhaust to 2.5" pipe to Dynomax mufflers then 2.5" tailpipes. Before I dumped right out of the tailpipes, which ended at the front of the tailgate but the noise at idle and low speed drove me nuts. My Chevelle has the same set up, it has a 355 with 292 Cam and Qjet.

Over the axle and behind the left tire. Being a panel, I was worried about noise and fumes coming in the back doors. Once I installed a new Steele Rubber back door seal, it wasn't as much of an issue, but for a panel, it's still the correct placement.
You can see the 45-degree chrome dump tip.

Re: exhaust setup on sbc

My build is a 51, s10 frame, 327. I used 2.5 inch headers to 2.5 inch tubing, 2 into 1, then thru a regular muffler from NAPA, over the rear axle and out under the rear roll pan. Nice V8 sound, not too loud. I think it's just right.

Check my build thread, post #541 and #589 for exhaust pics.

Re: exhaust setup on sbc

Do yourself a favor and run the pipes clear out back over the axle and either dump behind the rear tire or straight out the back. With glasspacks or turbos the concussion from exhaust dumping under the truck in front of the axle will drive you nuts on a serious road trip or a long daily commute. Dumping in front of the rear tire is bad enough with glass packs let alone under the truck. That is 70's jacked up Chevelle stuff and not what a guy wants if he really intends to put the truck on the road and go. Then you get the exhaust floating up into the cab from below if you get caught in traffic for any length of time.

2 inch pipes all the way back with glass packs will give you the old school rapp while larger exhaust will give you more of the performance rumble that is really popular now.

I had headers, 2-1/4 inch pipes that dumped behind the rear wheels and what look like turbos on my 71 with the 350 and got compliments on how it sounded quite often. It actually sounded a lot healthier than it was.

Mike, how long are your glass packs? I didn't hear it run the day I saw it.

Gotta admit I like how Dubie's sounds with 2-1/2 pipes & Magnaflows.

My 283 with headers and rumpety-rump cam sounds a little too quiet with the 2" pipes and some generic brand of "turbo" mufflers. Mine dump in front of the era wheels too.

Re: exhaust setup on sbc

On my V8 truck, I ran the pipes out the side in front of the back wheel. Then I added some 45* chrome tips angled back and toward the ground. Not near as loud as when the pipes just stuck out the side of the truck.

Re: exhaust setup on sbc

I picked me up a thrush turbo 3" in/out muffler today and gonna get exhaust shop to run me a ypipe from headers to 3" pipe then install muffler around bacl of cab area and have 3" pipe ran all the way out the back and turned out the passenger side behind rear tire. Seems lioe a simple clean setup that will work. Will post pictures and videos when done
