Frame on restoration

Is anyone else making their truck just nice. My truck runs great and I am going to fill in the few small dents and get it painted. Who else is sort of restoring their truck. I can't do a full one because I don't have time or money to do a frame off. I am hoping that I can still make it a real nice truck anyway.

Re: Frame on restoration

Absolutely a good option! Mine is a daily driver so I do projects to make it better that I can pull off between shifts at work. Very rewarding to drive between projects plus you get to test each mod independently. Good luck!

Re: Frame on restoration

That's what I did on my squarebody.

The nice thing about a pickup truck is...6 or 8 bolts to pull the box and you're halfway to a "frame off" anyway!

I did it between May and September in the driveway - it never made it inside the garage.

You can read about it here if you like:

Re: Frame on restoration

The only reason we did a frame off on my 67 was it went from a C-20 to a C-10 short bed. When I do the 75 C-30 dually it won't be since I want to be able to drive it..

Re: Frame on restoration

This is what I am doing as well. I just make a list of stuff to do and do it little by little. I don't have the time, money or the space to do a frame off.

Re: Frame on restoration

I did find a shop that will loan me one of their lifts to do some cleaning, frame member painting, under coating etc this summer. Looking forward to that.

Re: Frame on restoration

Since we're selling our "new" truck this one will have to be kept to one day or one weekend at the most projects. Disc brakes/tires are 1st.

Re: Frame on restoration

The plan for my c-10, in a nutshell:

1st Step: Make sure it goes, reliably.
2nd Step: Make sure it stops, safely.
3rd Step: Whatever, whenever, as time and budget allows.

If you want to keep driving, by all means yes! If you want it out of commission for a year + or in my case 4 go for a frame off. Oh yeah, it costs a crap load of money to do a frame off. Even if you are a tight wad.

That is exactly my plan. I'm poor lol. As long as I can get it on the road reliably and safely I will be very happy.

Re: Frame on restoration

im doing mine this way. its nice enough to not need a full resto, and im not trying to win car shows. I have been at it for 14 months now, but I have been able to drive it most of that time. Still needs body and paint, but otherwise its pretty nice now.
