Dumpinthegutter '62 Build

I'm going to get this started. I've been working on this truck for a long time. I tried to sell it a year or so ago, it's been sitting so it's time to put some work in on it. Nothing real fancy to see here as of yet. I've got some parts ordered and as things progress I'll up date.

Re: Dumpinthegutter '62 Build

Let the build begin...

About 15yrs ago, I purchased a 62 short bed and 2 parts trucks (63&64). The 62 was running, but had a white stepside bed from an early 80's model. The 63 was a SWB no drive train, and the 64 was a gutted stepside. I drove the 62 as was for 6 months or so before I began piecing the trucks together.

I took the cab and front from the 62 (only one that was titled), and mated it with the 63 bed and frame to get away from the stepsides and the torsion bars. This process took my father and I a few months. At that time I took the 305 engine from the 62, freshened it up a bit before it went in. That was really it. I drove it, 3 different colors like that until I went to college. B/c it was so long ago, I don't really have a ton of photos, but here's what I was able to find.

You can see the 80's stepside in the back ground.

Re: Dumpinthegutter '62 Build

During college, I started working at a metal shop. I didn't want to get my "new" car dirty so I brought the old truck up and drove her to work daily. After a few months, a co worker talked me into "ratting it out". So I rattle canned it flat black. I also took a torch to the springs, to lower it. I know I could have cut them, I know there are much better ways of doing things...... I also got rid of the wheels and went the more traditional route.

Here are the photos I found of it in those stages. Probably 8 yrs ago.

Re: Dumpinthegutter '62 Build

There is a set of those wheels 6 lug here in town on craigslist. Reminds me of the 80s!
Rat look was a good look for it, red roof and wheels on the black looked cool.

Re: Dumpinthegutter '62 Build

Thanks Fisher.

After I graduated college, I got a better job and didn't drive the truck much for a few years. I had a few offers from people to buy it, but I couldn't ever let it go. 2 yrs ago I traded a GSXR to a guy at a local body shop to give grandma a new do. The bike wasn't worth a lot, so I didn't expect a show quality job. After leaving it with him for a few months. I got it back and started driving it again.

The body guy thought he was doing me a favor here on the rear. At the time I wasn't crazy about it, and today I really hate it.

I wanted the white top, to match my FJ cruiser at the time.

Re: Dumpinthegutter '62 Build

Last year I posted it for sale on this forum as seen above. I got a few low offers, but nothing I was willing to accept. It sat all last year.

A few weeks ago I decided to sell one of my rock crawlers to fund a rebuild. So last week I dug her out of my dads shop. I saw a set of boss wheels in the window at the local tire shop that I thought would look good. Put them on, and ordered a complete suspension upgrade. The suspension should be in Friday. I'm also going to redo the entire drive train. New discs up front, disc convert the rear, LS engine, etc. Once all of that is done, I'll pretty well be out of money for now. I'll just go back to cruising it until I can save some more coins to redo the interior.

Here it is today.

For the rest of the build, I will keep track of everything. Thanks for looking.

Re: Dumpinthegutter '62 Build

I love the fact you have had this truck for so long.

The current look certainly does it for me. The black wheels and stance come together well.

Thanks Grizz. I wish I had more documentation of it, but I guess I'm just lucky to have found what I have.

It's hard to get rid of any vehicle that's been such a big part of your life. I'm glad you decided to keep it, and I look forward to your updates.

Re: Dumpinthegutter '62 Build

Thanks for the kind words everyone. I've driven it everyday this week and it's got me ready for the work that is ahead.

Here are a few pictures my mom had on her computer from the various stages. They were actually taken with a digital camera and not scanned ones like the first pics.

Home job seat bracket.

I stopped in a church lot on my way home from work today and got some pretty good shots of it as it is.

And here's a quick photochop of it would look like layed it out.

Re: Dumpinthegutter '62 Build

Thanks. I will document the entire process. Suspension is next, and the all the goodies have been ordered. I don't know that it will lay exactly that low, but it should be pretty close.

Parts are still trickling in. Haven't spent a lot of time on here to know if this is a first, but how about an angle eye HID conversion?
