Installing Rack & Pinion on your C10

Hi guy's, I'm a new guy on here I have a 66 short panel truck, I've bagged it, got 3 in drop spendals and raised the k-member 1-1/2 in the frame (after reading some builds on here there where better ways of doing that!). But anyway I want to put a rack & pinion on it but I don't know the best way to do the tie rod ends? I was curious what you all thought! O and by the way this forum rocks!

Re: Installing Rack & Pinion on your C10

why do you want the rack and pinion over the standard drag link and gear box set up? is it a clearance issue?

Well it puts my tie rod ends at a serious angle, cuz I moved the K-member up in to the frame.

Re: Installing Rack & Pinion on your C10

I built my own front cross member, with a rack and pinion mount. What I had done was had the stock spindels reamed out to the newer taper. (OEM is 1.5 taper and the T-Bird rod ends I used are a 2.0) They fit well now.

I also did not narrow my front end any, which, looking back would have been a good idea, as I did have a little trouble getting my toe in close and having a safe amount of threads in the tie rod end. Ended up with some inner tie rod spacers in the rack, which I am not big on. I have since found that there are tie rod ends available that are 1.5" longer in the threaded section, which would have solved my whole problem, too. It's all a learning curve when you start building your own parts.

There's a lot of good kits out there, and my decision was purely with budget, and I wanted to see if I could do it.

Look's like you cut your frame to fit over the cross member. That's not a bad idea. I should have seen your truck around, do you go to many shows? If you get a chance you should come to Kunkels Drive-in over in Connersville this summer they have a cruise-in twice a month.

Ok cool I've seen the different taper reamers, I'll probably go with that! Wonder where I could find the longer tie rod ends you were talking about. Yeah I'm like you, no money, and love to build! Thanks for the info!

Cool, just realized your in Connersville! I know a lot of people that live there, I think half the population works in Shelbyville! Anyway I got on the road last May just in time for Beatersville car show in Louisville, KY which is an AWESOME car show, but other than that just a few local shows, but I will have to check out that cruise-in your talking about!

You may want to check this show out it's in Lewisville right on US40. Lots of cool cars and cool people, your ride would fit right in.

If I got it back together, I will for sure! Its in pieces at the moment! Doing a T-56 swap and all that goes with it like, drive shaft, clutch linkage and rear end gears.
