How to seal water leak?

After multiple tests I have identified a water leak from the engine compartment into the cab of my truck. The under the hood part of the heater assembly isn't sealed to the sheet metal well enough to keep water out when it rains. Water eventually ends up on the passenger side floor.

I'm looking for advice on how to seal this. I don't care to remove the heater box in order to accomplish this. Would RTV sealer + rubberized paint be a reasonable option?

I don't see how its possible for rain water to get to the area you are pointing to, I think you have rusted out cowl and rains getting through there....

Good call. . . I previously had a cowl problem and sealed it up nice. I poured a water hose into the cowl for about 45 seconds with full pressure and got no leak.

However, this area is against the firewall so any water running from under the hood from the windshield side will drip down the firewall and now into the heater box.

I've tested and tested this. Water pours into the cab with the hose pointed on this spot for just a second.

Any thoughts on sealing?

'Magic snot' works wonders! It is sometimes an ugly sight, but it works well enough to close up gaps, like you're dealing with there. Any color of RTV would work, if you can get one to resemble the background color, so much the better. It's not like the 'repair' is always visible.

leaks generally come from area where the body is
pieced together under wiper cowl, seams are on both sides
can be seen and sealed from under dash not as easy from top

When you say you can see the seam under the dash, I suppose it is necessary to remove that insulation material and I should be able to see the seam? Is that accurate or is there more to it?

If you hold a garden hose on it, it probably would leak, but with the rubber weatherstrip sandwitched between the firewall and the hood when closed, I can't see how rain water gets to the heater housing, unless the weatherstrip is bad.....

Try some fingertip rope caulk. You can get it at any hardware store or home center type store. Easy to apply and doesn't dry out...
