Speedometer cable

Hey Y'all

I need to replace my speedometer cable. Can someone tell me the length of the stock cable to hook up to the 3 speed manual?

And regular cable vs metal covered cable?

Is it a pain in the ass to remove and replace the cable on the back of the cluster? any advice on the correct way to do it would be appreciated!

Re: Speedometer cable

Mines installed so no help with the length. I kept the stock metal one, but used the 74 plastic extension to the transfer case. Small hands help and hopefully the connector is not too tight! Worst case is the bezel only has 3 screws and usually everything has enough slack so it pulls out. It is a tight fit, if you have good paint tape it first. On mine I need to use a thin screwdriver (I have one that goes to a knife edge for pulling wood trim) at the top to get the plastic to clear the dash metal.

Re: Speedometer cable

I got my cable and housing at NAPA. It cost $20.50 but I didn't record the p/n. You don't need to know the length, just tell them it is for a 5X Chevy truck. It seems to be longer than I actually needed so it would probably fit a truck with an automatic or even a 4X4. If you only want the cable it will probably come as a universal cable that you cut to length and put the tip on.

Thank you. im deciding between this one, or $10 extra for a metal cable. the $10 is not a factor, I just want to get the better one....

Re: Speedometer cable

You should be able to walk into your local Napa or other full service parts house and either get one that they have on the shelf or get it with their next stock order from the warehouse without paying the shipping from an online vendor and waiting for up to a week. The quality from the online vendor won't be any higher and to me the metal cable isn't any higher in quality than the plastic one but it may have more of an original look to it.

Re: Speedometer cable

I guess i thought the black one was metal just with a casing on it. Either way i havnt had a problem with it, plus if it is plastic or just the coating on it less likely for it to rust up and stick.

oh yeah, its the same metal cable inside. its just the black vinyl outside vs metal. I assume the metal outside is made from a metal that doesn't rust, but I don't know.

my current cable is a vinyl outside one, and its cracked about an inch away from where it attaches to the transmission, and from what I can tell, its cracked because the cable is too short by a few inches. I suppose removing the cable I have and measuring it is the first step
