Just looked at a 72 and thought it was priced high - are my expectations off?

I am shopping for a LWB 72 C10. Just scoped out a decent truck. non original 350, 3 speed. Two tone. Black Custom Deluxe Interior. Truck was resprayed, not great but good. Non original motor, shifter bushings shot. Truck shook a bit going down the road, figure an alignment and some tie rod ends. The rockers were starting to rust on the backsides and the front cab mounts were toast. Looking at $4500 for this truck. Am I nuts or does this seem like a lot. I figured this was a $2500 or $3500 tops.

Sounds a little high like you say. $5000 should buy you a very solid pickup that doesn't have tons of issues.

Really need pictures to give a good opinion. Do you have a link to the for sale ad?

Re: Just looked at a 72 and thought it was priced high - are my expectations off?

The guy said he had $4500 tied up in it and that was the lowest he would go. He was very nice and I didn't want to insult him. The truck was decent - I just think maybe my expectations were different for that kind of money. The drivers rocker was almost gone from the underside, the passenger was starting to go. Nothing visible from the outside. The front cab mounts were both toast.

Re: Just looked at a 72 and thought it was priced high - are my expectations off?

we don't always get out of them what we put into them (just ask me...) - recommend offer what you're comfortable with and if he won't accept it, that's fine. I will admit, by your description, I thought it would look worse than it does in the pic above. I think $3500-$4000 is an acceptable price for that truck, but it depends on pricing in YOUR area. Really does differ from place to place. Nashville is truck country, so he might think he's got more than he has to offer - but it is also a place where there are some good ones available, so only offer what you're comfortable with, and if you can't get it for that, don't lose any sleep over it. The next dream truck will be along any day now. You could probably work the shifter bushing and alignment issues for at least a $3500 or $4000 final price. But if he won't budge, he won't budge. Always seem to be the case, except when I'm the seller....

Re: Just looked at a 72 and thought it was priced high - are my expectations off?

The prices of our trucks have gone up. They tanked a few years ago but for some reason over the pas 12 months they have skyrocketed. Rusted out long beds are starting at $4500 and descent short beds are creeping up around 10K. I cant explain it and they certainly aren't worth the prices these people are putting on them. We are now seeing asking prices on nice trucks between 20 and 30K. No way! We really have to just except the fact the "old truck" blue collar hobby that has been for so many years has now become a fad like Harleys in the early 90's.

The high schoolers will burn out soon which will bring the prices back to normal. Remember, these are not rare pickups. Every barn in America has one.

I agree that Barret Jackson has caused prices to increase. Market value though rules the road: if people are wililng to pay those prices, that's what people will charge.

Someone offered me $5K for my truck in 1993. When I get this summer's plans finished, it will be 2x the truck it was then. I wouldn't part with it at any price.

Getting back on topic: I think $4,500 is a good deal on that truck. Yes the cab needs attention but don't they all? 3 speed in the floor or on the column? I do like the 2 tone and side trim but I still rather prefer stepsides.

3 speed on the column. Owner added power brakes, manual steering. It looks to be an early 80's v8. Guessing 350, I didn't decode any of the engine tags. The truck drove ok and had decent power.

Almost every original 67 thru 72 truck you find will have rust issues in the rockers and front cab mounts. Its not like the parts to fix it are hard to find. and almost everyone has a wire welder. Just offhand looking at the picture I wouldn't pay $4500 for that truck. However If I Owned it I wouldn't sell it for less than 5K.

Re: Just looked at a 72 and thought it was priced high - are my expectations off?

i would have offered 2500-2800 even if he did not take it it would give him something to think about
then i'd call him back in 3-4 weeks and see if he thought about it and wanted it gone maybe go up to 3000-3200 range

I had a kid stop by last summer with $10K in his hand...I still have my truck. Everything's for sale if you have the money...he did not.

No i didn't. There was a nice white one that was on CL for $4500 that went pretty quick.

Scottville seems to be a rally point for old C10s.

The Mrs. really wants a white/yellow two tone.

Re: Just looked at a 72 and thought it was priced high - are my expectations off?

Hey Dman I recently purchased a very similar truck for $3100 in the Houston area (does have the original motor and trans):

about $500 in parts and supplies and many many hours :

That Ochre truck you are looking at looks pretty clean I would say $3800-$4000 is not that far off

If you think old trucks are overpriced you should check out the new ones.

Re: Just looked at a 72 and thought it was priced high - are my expectations off?

There were quite a few comments about original motor, honestly numbers matching motors is really a Ferrari, 'Vette, Muscle Car, Big Block thing. It's a truck motor, not of particularly high value, probably worth more as iron than as a motor most of them.

On the truck from the OP, if you think the rockers are starting to rust, um they're probably way rusted already. If you'd like to think they are just starting to rust, then don't touch them and you can continue to think it's just a little bubble. If you pull them off, likely you'll be replacing lower A pillar, lower B pillar, floor ends, cab corners, maybe kick panels. Patina is a wonderful illusion, if $4500 gives you pause, go for patina.

The prices may be going up on these trucks, but in the pre '72 arena these trucks are still a bargain, try and find a pre '72 Chevell or Impala or Elco for $4500 that looks like anything, good luck. What's amazing is the size of this community, the obvious interest in this particular year range of trucks and that they are as cheap as they are. This is just the tip of it, I sold off most of my Jimmy locally, I only really wanted the body and the frame, parts were sold to a dozen buyers, all very into these specific trucks, of those only 2 knew this board existed, a board with 120,000 members. There may have been lots of these trucks produced but there is a tremendous interest in them.
