HD driveshaft carrier bearing removal?
I need to replace the carrier bearing in the truck I'm driving, any tricks/tips? I haven't dealt with the HD style before, just the light duty type with the slip yoke at the trans. It looks like it should just press off, am I correct on that? I messed with it some and it seemed to be stuck pretty good; I think it's probably just seized on from age, but I want to make sure before I get aggressive with it.
Also, any idea where to get a new splined seal for the slip yoke? |

Yes, the bearing itself is a press fit onto the front shaft.

Mark the yoke and shaft with a grinder or marker before you take it apart so they go back on in exactly the same position. That you you won't disturb the balancing, or have to get it rebalanced. Same thing if you ever pull a slip joint apart.

Re: HD driveshaft carrier bearing removal?
Thanks for confirming that, captain. I'll make up a puller of some sort.
The comment about the yokes reminds me of an odd/funny thing; one of my LWB C-10's has one of the yokes welded on incorrectly from GM! Impossible to get correct orientation with that one. Not just off a couple degrees or something, either! Anyone have any part numbers or anything for the correct seal with the splines in it? I poked around a little today but didn't see anything that looked like a direct match. |
