speedometer question

I took my cluster out to replace the gas gage when I went to screw the speedometer cable back on the nut wont slide far enough up yo screw onto the back. what am I doing wrong?

You don't have the end of the cable (the square part) in to the square slot in the gauge.

there is a brass ring on the cable that buts up against the back of the gage that prevents it from going in farther. I cant get the cable housing with the nut to move close enough to start the threads

could that brass ring have slid toward the end of the cable preventing me to getting it slid far enough in?

Maybe the cable is pulled out of the gear down at the tranny end.
