Pinging 6
I can't figure out what I'm doing wrong...
Got a 235 with about 27k on it since rebuild, Fenton headers, Tom Langdon's HEI, and a 2-bbl Weber,3:38 rear end, granny 4 speed. I only run 91 octane gas. Truck runs great, but going up some hills at 50-60MPH, I get some pinging. It wasn't doing this 6 months ago - I've retarded the timing, but when I get it retarded enough to lose the uphill ping, it's too retarded to run at max efficiency. Spark plugs are toast brown, no other problems I know of. Reading Sharps40 disaster story kinda has me worried. Should I be? |

Re: Pinging 6
Check advance weights and springs and see if they are working well. Also you could check the vacuum pot to see if it is returning correctly. If both of those look fine a lean condition will also cause detonation.

Re: Pinging 6
You obviously have carb adjusted right...might consider richening it a tad. Sharp's issue was to much advance, to lean and not enough octane far as I can remember. Note..to much retarding can cause issues as well...8-10 degrees below TDC is a good setup I believe...I'm not a go pro on timing. lol

Re: Pinging 6
I backed off the timing a bit, re-adjusted carb. Pinging quit, idles a bit different, but running strong. I had just listened to it to get best running, prob had it way too advanced. Got a 400 mile trip up into the Ozarks in a couple weeks, ought to see how it does on some real hills.
