Bellhousing for a 62 ( which one)

I am looking at buying a 1962 chevy truck. It has a 235 and a manual trans.I want to swap to the later 250-292 six. The bellhousing is not the same.I know that the V-8 bellhousing and the late six is the same -as is the flywheel starter etc.
The problem is the slave cylinder on the clutch mechanism. Will this bolt up to any 60"s v8 bellhousing or is it specific to the 60-62 . If so which bellhousing?I really want to stay six cylinder power - just go to the later version.

Do you plan to keep the hydraulic clutch or go mechanical?

you will need the 60-62or some 63 v8 b/housing with the right side clutch release opening
or convert over to having the hydr. on the left side. if you are going to p/brakes see capt fab as he has a hydr clutch master setup to go with it

Re: Bellhousing for a 62 ( which one)

Here are a few photos of the cast iron bell housing with the hydraulic clutch on the passenger side. You can see the two bolts that hold the "slave" in Photo #2 The bottom photo was a "before" photo and the top 2 photos are "after".

As you can also see in Photo #2, this bell housing has the mounts built into it and was basically a "plug and play" with the original crossmember.

Originally, this was bolted to the original "granny low" transmission. The transmission shown is the NP440/MY6 from the 1980's trucks. The bolt patterns for both of these transmissions were the same.

Hope this helps...
Tom

Re: Bellhousing for a 62 ( which one)

Best of luck on finding that bellhousing, I've been looking off and on for some time without much luck or just flat didn't want to pay the rediculous price some people asked. I'll probably end up going with the Novak setup myself. The only casting number I know of is 3765710.

But hey, if you find a pair of them let me know!!!

Re: Bellhousing for a 62 ( which one)

I could be wrong, but I think the bell housing you want is common in some of the other GM cars of that era...I don't think it was just for the trucks.

Maybe someone else can chime in on that...

Re: Bellhousing for a 62 ( which one)

There are a couple ways aside from the '60-'62 V8 bellhousing. One would be to use the standard '63-'67 bellhousing with a hydraulic clutch conversion from Novak. You could use the '68-'72 bellhousing with an adapter ring for the trans input bearing retainer. Second would be to use a '84-'91 bellhousing, which are setup with a hydraulic clutch. The issue with this is that you will have to remove the bellhousing crossmember and add a trans crossmember. Thirdly you could do away with the hydraulic clutch and convert to mechanical.

Re: Bellhousing for a 62 ( which one)

How hard is it to convert to mechanical? I have a bellhousing pivot bar from the bell housing. I can get the timy bracket no problem what else is required?
Thanks. Lmd.

Yes, I also would be curious on what entails and what years are compatible for converting to mechanical linkage.

They have the clutch fork on the passenger side and use a hydraulic clutch setup. Only in 60-62 Chevy trucks and not too many came with V8's as the inline 6 was the 235, or 261, which has a different bellhousing bolt pattern. I've been to a bunch of yards and still haven't found one with a V8 in it, found a few 6's though.

Not trying to hijack.... my 60 has a 250 with hydraulic clutch (on the left side)
isn't the 250 bell housing the same as the v8's

Re: Bellhousing for a 62 ( which one)

How about a hydraulic bearing? I would trade out my bellhouse for lighter race aproved one since I am going this route.
