1967 Posi Unit
Can a posi unit from a 1967 six lug rear end be swapped with a non-posi 1971 5 lug rear? I picked up a 1967 SWB the other day that has a factory 3.73 posi and was wondering if I could use it in my 1971 project?

Re: 1967 Posi Unit
If you are talking about just the Posi carrier and gears, then yes it can. If you are talking about swapping the complete rearend, then sort of. The '67 housing will bolt inplace of the '71 housing, but the axles and overall length of hte '67 is shorter. The '65-'69 6 lug and part of '70 model year 6 lug rearends are shorter by aboutr 1.5" overall than the late '70 6 lug and the '71 up 5 lug rearends.
You can swap out the carriers, just like you would to do a gear change or rebuild of the center section. The carrier is the same from '65 to about '81 or so when GM stopped using the 12 bolt in the 1/2 ton trucks.

Re: 1967 Posi Unit
Does anyone make 5 lug rear axles to swap into a 1967 6 lug rear end? Seems like it would be less work to use the 1967 rear end with posi that I have and just put new 5 lug axles in it. I am running disc brakes on the rear so I wouldn't need to worry about backing plates.
