305 probably dead!

My indestructable SB 305 may have been done in by the cooling system. The heater supply hose cracked at the intake connection. I get to work open the hood and coolant is going everywhere. Easy fix, cut the hose end and reconnect.
Digital guages are scary. I saw the temp get up to 235+!! I check the oil and the oil is cooked. It's still a liquid but you can tell by feeling it between your fingers that it was subjected to extreme heat. The oil pressure guage is stuck at ~73 PSI. The normal PSI is slightly lower at normal high speeds. I plan on changing the oil ASAP. This is the first time I've cooked an engine oil. The SB has survived a cracked radiator but this time the Texas heat may have done the 305. It still idles smooth. Now I'll just have to wait till I change the oil.

Don't panic...
I got the same problem on my 300ci Buick years ago , all the cooling water was gone ( hose blew away ) , my temp sensor was shot ( no lamp on the dash ) , the engine got blocked...
I let the engine to cool down , fix the hose , put fresh water in , start the engine back , no special noise...
These engines ar solid as a rock , it's all cast iron , change your oil & cross your fingers

No worrys. 305 don't want to be replaced with a 350 so they survive through everything (wether it is to the delight or dismay of the owner). My 305 beast won't die. They may not have power, but they are stout little things!

I blew up my water pump in my 307ci caddy once. Driving home it started pinging. Had to keep driving it for another couple miles with no coolant what so ever. The dam thing not only ran fine after fixing the pump, bu the oil wasen't even cooked! And that was in 110* heat. I think your 305 will be fine. Which is good for you, since I don't think there really is any super duper 350 in the works :p

Well just in case OL Bullet bit the big one, I happen to know where a very low mile LS1 motor is at. It's fresh out of a totaled Vette....

If you rally want another 305, I can make you a deal on a 84 Z-28 H.O. 305 that has less than 30k on it....

The 305 has survived. I drove the truck home and changed the oil this morning. No problems. Still have a 16 sec 305 in the 4000 lbs truck. I think it even idles smoother. Guess the 350 upgrade is going to have to wait. The filter was really cooked. I pulled off the filter and the usual spill while you unscrew it didn't happen!! The filter was basically empty! Well the SB survived and it lives to race and terrorize the streets.

Those who doubt will see nothing but tailgate. The block in the picture is not the same one I'm going to use now. I have 94 suburban 350 that will get a 272 XE roller cam.

hey i got one of those indestructible 305's too. it leaks oil like crazy around timimg cover seal i think, well i went for about 3 months without adding any oil to thinking and hoping it would blow chunks, my oil pressure gauge aint worked in over six months. well it finally got to making all kinds of scary noises, popping, missing, and got so bad i couldn't even drive it to finish it off. guess the oil got so low it couldn't even pump it to the lifters, but it just wouldn't die. well i put about a little over 3 quarts of oil in it and the damned thing ran better than it ever did and still going strong after 3 more months. i been keeping a check on the oil now and guess i'm gonna fix the leak in the t.c. cover if it wants to live that bad. soon as I get the leak fixed it'll probably expolode then.
