Gas filler location?
I'm about ready to place the gas tank under the bed of my '64 stepper and was wondering something.
IF you had the choice of bringing the fuel neck out behind the license plate in the center of the roll pan or adding a fuel door to the side of the rear fender, what would your preference be? Any benefit of one over the other and any hidden issues that might pop up with either choice?

Hidden behind the license plate sounds cool, but I think it would be a pain in your back trying to fill. Also it would be a rather short neck and would have to a sealed tight cap. I would go w the factory style flip door.

I would either do behind the license plate or figure out a way to have one of the bed planks on hinges.

I love the hinged plank idea, as I've seen it before. However, I just know that I'd forget to make sure the nozzle was empty before holding it over the bed and the residual fuel in the nozzle, left by the previous user, would pour out over my bed.

I say add a door to the driver's side. That is what I plan to do some day. It also somewhat depends on what your plans are for the truck. I considered behind the license plate, but figure that will be a pain if I have a trailer hooked up, and the bed floor is out of the question, because I plan to use the truck to haul.

I just built my tank the other day. I put filler neck on driverside bed floor behind wheel tub so if I have a sheet of plywood drywall what ever I.can get to it

I used one of the motorcycle "Pop-Up" type filler caps on the driver side fender. I used some of the hose that Lowes sell that is gas safe and some 1.5" exhaust pipe bent to make the tight bends. I am very pleased with the outcome.

I also plan on installing an under the bed tank. Nosing around the wrecking yards the square fuel doors from a Ford Fairmont or a Chevy Astro Van look like a very good candidate to weld into my 64 fleet side bed. Just a thought.
