im a little confused, and there is a plethora of bad, wrong infomation out there...

what engine codes classify an ls3 designation?
is a L92 an ls3?
is a L94 an ls3

Re: lsx designations

any motor that is a 6.2 would be a ls3 variant.
there were ,lets say crossover from the 6.0 to the 6.2 which had the same heads as a ls3 but were 6.0's. the 6.0's really depend on the heads, rectangular or cathedral port with ls3 being rectangular.
really any 6.0 or 6.2 is a great power motor just depends what you want to do with it.
cheers

Re: lsx designations

Check out this wikipedia link, it's pretty helpful at breaking down the engines.

l92 is the term used for square-port heads that fit the over 4" bore motors. It usually also refers to the intake manifold that goes with it. In absolute truth, its the designation for the 6.2L from the 06/07 change, which was the largest displacement v8 chevy offered with the discontinuation of the 8.1 (rights were sold to another major company....ask me how I know).

The l94 is an L92 with AFM/DOD, otherwise most of the non-fuel hard parts are the same.

The heads are basically the same, but ls3's came with different valves.

The l94/l92/ls3/ls9 are all a "Family" of engines, being that they are more similar to each other, than they are to the other engines in the line.

Nothing besides an Ls3 IS an Ls3, but they are variants/derivatives/bases.

Re: lsx designations

an LS3 (6.2L) is also a genIV motor while an LS1 (5.7L) is genIII.... and the LS2 (6.0L) kind of splits the two. Differences besides those of the motors themselves are the sensor and computer changes/upgrades along the line which also meant wiring/connector changes as years went by...which is why you hear of people having trouble mixing/matching different year model stuff.

All GenIII and Gen IV motors are considered LS motors. Often labeled as LSx (not LSX referring to the special engine). This is supposed to mean LS(variable) so LS1,2,3,4,6,7,9. The Lq,Ly, and LM's are also "ls" engines.

Uh, kinda, but not quite. My l92 has VVT and no AFM. VVT is great for heavy vehicles like my suburban, gives great low end torque. I look at it like this, for the minimal HP difference between an ls3 and an l92, the big price difference makes up for it.
