1960 Apache wheel selection HELP
I recently purchased a 1960 Apache fleetside. I purchased a McMgaughy's 2" drop spindle disk brake conversation kit for the front end. I would really like to keep a stock looking wheel but I am unsure what will work with this particular front end. I don't quite understand the whole back spacing measurements but I am assuming the stock wheels I currently have wont clear the new brake calipers. Any suggestions?
I also purchased 235 75 15 Coker whitewalls. Did I get the cart before the horse. Please help! |

The cart is not before the horse. They're just standing side by side. Your tires will still fit but you need rims with the proper offset. Your used wheel options depend on if you stayed with six lug or went with five.

I'm curious will the those 235 75 15 fit the stock 5.5 and 5 inch wide rims, also if a spacer was used to "offset" the rim out would it be enough. (don't mean to high jack your thread)

Big brake kit or standard? The stock rims should clear. But there is always clearance mishaps. If big brakes then big rims required.

Re: 1960 Apache wheel selection HELP
Savethatclassic,
The wheels that came with the truck are 6 lug 15" x 6" I do believe. Who really knows if they are the originals, but appear to be. They have the period correct center caps. Coker Tires recommend the 235 75 15 tires be installed on nothing less than 6" and nothing greater than 8" wide wheels. |

Here is a photo of the spindle / disk brake kit. Standard size disk?

Re: 1960 Apache wheel selection HELP
Drop spindles and calipers can get tricky with some stock steelies. The spindles can cause the rim to rub the a arms upon turning. Sometimes a grinder can be used on the arms to clearance things a bit. Some older rims will not clear the calipers either. Always test first before mounting up your tires. The 235 tires will fit the narrower rims but they may look a bit "pinched".

Re: 1960 Apache wheel selection HELP
You do show the original rims that go on your 60 but unfortunately they will not work for your disc brake conversion....calipers will rub and the rim will not mount! What I did on my 60 was I bought some bare steel smoothies (Wheel Vintiques) 15X7 from Summit - way cheaper and powder coated them...Here sum pics...

Re: 1960 Apache wheel selection HELP
Thanks for the info!! Any certain offset on the wheels you purchased? And would you recommend an 8" wide wheel opposed to the 7"?

Re: 1960 Apache wheel selection HELP
Personally I like 7's. I think we have a big ol' thread on this site with tire and wheel pics too. Here's mine with 235's on stock squarebody rims.
