Fuel Tank Sending Unit?
I'm in the market again for a 30 ohm fuel tank sending unit. Are there any brands/vendors that are better than the others, or just shop for price?
I haven't had much luck with the aftermarket sending units so far. They're either inaccurate, or have a fairly short life span...... Thanks |

Re: Fuel Tank Sending Unit?
I haven't run into an accurate aftermarket sending unit yet, and I sell 55-57 Chevy parts. I have used several sending units from Classic Truck Parts with good results and very reasonable prices.

I personally have installed three different sending units in my 56 Chevy, they all read the same. When the tank is full it reads just under full, when I have a half tank, it will read one quarter tank and stays there then it will all of a sudden be empty. I just fill it when it gets below one half. Aftermarket sending unit in my 64 C30 is pretty accurate but I never let it get below one quarter. The same thing on one of my C10s. |

Re: Fuel Tank Sending Unit?
I can't recall a single remanufactured (Chinese) part that I have purchased for my truck that was as well made as an original part. Door checks, front fender, stepside tail lights, window whiskers, etc. - all were crap.

Re: Fuel Tank Sending Unit?
My original GM fuel sending unit behaves exactly like the aftermarket sending units 63urban describes in his post. The needle reads between full and 1/2 full, but doesn't really let you know when you are about empty until you are actually empty. Does anyone know it there is a way of adjusting/cleaning the sending unit other than bending the float arm? Maybe the variable resister can be cleaned or something? Or is it possible the gauge itself needs to be calibrated? If that is even possible.

Re: Fuel Tank Sending Unit?
I think back in 1963 gas was probably 30 cents a gallon ,I would bet people didn't watch the gas gauge as much as we do now ,,and just filled it when it looked close to empty ,,I am sure that's how they worked from factory bouncy

Re: Fuel Tank Sending Unit?
Good used original are nice but remember they are 50 years old so they could go at any time. As far as the aftermarket being more accurate, I think it's a matter of quality of the materials they are made of. If there were such a thing as high quality reproduction, it would probably be so expensive no one would by them.
