Need help from the GMC experts

I was trying to find an answer but did not have any luck. So I was wondering if anyone know which Tach works with the GMC 351 V6 engine, V8 or L6 Tach? Those are the only two I have seen or does it have it's own unique tach? Thank you in advance for the help.

Re: Need help from the GMC experts

I recently parted out a 67 GMC with the 351 and it had the L6 tach but I never tested it to know if it worked. Tom (Tbone1964) would be the guy that knows for sure.

Re: Need help from the GMC experts

I suspect the L6 tach would work just fine...it's calibrated to count 1 crankshaft revolution for every six distributor firings...whether the engine is an L6 or V6 or a radial 6 or whatever shouldn't matter.

Tbone1964 or SS Tim or Bruceman1968 can confirm....

The 6 cyl tach will do fine. If your not trusting that, get a cheapo tach from somewhere and make temp hookups with it in the 6 cyl position. Alot cheaper than frying or trying OE.

Should be a 6 cyl tach for 6 cyl engine you need.

Re: Need help from the GMC experts

Thank you to everyone, that is what I thought. Figures I have a perfect V8 tach dash that is useless for me. Well on to the search for a l6 tach, I really appreciate the help.

Re: Need help from the GMC experts

The tach just counts RPMs,so only needs to know how many cylinders it's counting. It doesn't care where the cylinders are as long as they rotate on the same single axis.
