Classic wheel/ late model column?

I have an 85 non tilt column in my 53 AD. I'd like to use a period steering wheel AND have the horn work.

I know the splines are the same, but the horn is the big hang up. Has anyone found a good vintage steering wheel that will work? On the 60-66 trucks the horn contact is at 2 o'clock and the later column is closer to about 10:30.

Thanks

Re: Classic wheel/ late model column?

I used a 82 eldo column tilt/tele with a 48 steering wheel. probably similar. Look at my build thread starting at post 628. Not hard or any machining, just had to figure out how to adapt the wheel horn button which grounds thru the steel column to the modern that grounds differently.

Re: Classic wheel/ late model column?

Did the hole for the horn contact line up with the hole in the wheel? I know I have a few degrees of rotation on the column, but the 60-66 wheel has it located wrong. I might try and locate it and redrill the 61 hub.

Re: Classic wheel/ late model column?

If you still have the wheel that came off the column try laying both wheels on the bench oriented the same so you can compare the back sides and figure out the differences. That might allow for a simple fix.

I have all the parts to do just that but was hoping for a simple fix that didn't require machine work on the hub. I'm thinking its a change of the turn signal cam.
