Raced a 2500HD.

Yesterday my little sister's boyfreind showed up right as I was changing the cap,rotor and coil on my truck.So he says he wants to race.


He has a new 2500hd with like a 496 big block.


We lined them up.I got the jump the first time I pulled him by about 2 lengths up until 90.(The road is is down a hill.It's straight with plenty of room to slow down)


We raced back.It is pretty close to a 1/4mile.Slightly uphill then down a little hill.This time I didn't get the jump.I had him by about 1/2 a lenght and then he slowly edged by me about 80.



I didn't think I did to bad considering my motor is on it's way out.What do these trucks run in the 1/4?

I believe a 496 HD runs 16-something, but i will have to go dig up my old Motor Trend to know for sure.

My boss has a '99 Chevy 1/2 ton ex. cab. and he really wants to race me (kinda strange having a 40 year old guy asking you to line 'em up, lol). It has a 5.3/auto in it, and i'm pretty confident i will win, but i'm not sure. Don't those 5.3's have like 285 net HP? I highly doubt my 350 is making that much net horsepower, but my truck is quite a bit lighter than his....

Huh?? I was reading the specs on your 350. Why wouldnt you think that you were making more then 285hp? I would guess that you were making more then that. Unless you dont it tuned correctly.

You truck is lighter then a new Chevy truck? Are you sure? hahahah I doubt that one too.

Just saying...No big deal either way. You can still haul more in yours

That's actually not a wild assumption...curb weight on a 2WD extended-cab is over 4600lb for a shortbed, and 4700lb for a longbed...so if Yellow72Custom's LWB is a C10, he's at least equal in weight, if not considerably less.

Of course, that is mosty due to the extended cab. A single-cab C1500 is still 4000lb, surprisingly...I did not know that!

Of course...the question is, does "curb weight" include all fluids?

My truck weighed in at 3980 lbs w/o me in it at the last scale i took it too. The curb weight on my boss's ex. cab is close to 5000 lbs as Project1970 said. If you look at a new Chevy parked next to an old one, you will see. The new ones are proably 6" wider, and taller, as well as being an extended cab it is longer than my truck too.

As far as the HP thing goes, i am proably making about 325 gross HP, but not 325 net HP. Net HP is the power the engine puts out as it is installed in the vehicle, with all accessories (alternator, PS, A/C, full exhaust, ect) hooked up. If you were to take out my motor and put it on the dyno w/o a water pump, and open headers, i am sure it would make quite a bit over 285 HP, but as it is installed in the truck with all the accessories and the exhaust hooked up, it would roughly make more like 250-260 HP.

I'm still pretty confident i will win....whats the 1/4 mile times on a '99 C10 with an automatic and a 5.3? They run high 15's dont they?

well i raced and whooped a 72 F250 today, i met the kid at school cause he parked next to me and we talked for a while, he was running a 400cu.i. against my 350 and when we got them on the interstate he was nothing but another car in my rear view

Yeah you guys are probably right. I just dont think of todays trucks weighing so much because they dont seem as heavy made like ours. Just today I seen a 2000+ Z-71 C1500 with a small trailer carrying a leveling blade for a tractor and it was sitting down like it had a load of sand in it or something. Just dont seem all that heavy duty made like I think of ours.

My first race i ever did was against a new chevy 1500 single cab step side. Man was i pumped after i left him at the line. NO clue what size engine though??

I wouldn't line up against a Silverado assuming you've got it in the bag. Those things are pretty quick. Depends on what you've got for gears, but they pull HARD to about 55-60, then kinda slow up from there. If you're going the 1/4 mile and got some ponies in a truck that will hook up, run it. If you're going stoplight to stoplight, it'll be a good race. I got smoked, and I do mean SMOKED by a guy in a shortbox Z-71 with a 5.3 and I was in my folks '94 LT1 Caprice. He got the jump on me, and though I was to the floor, he still pulled from me til around 65-70. It was all over when he shut off and I kept on rolling well into 3 figures. Off the line though, they're FAST! Why wouldn't they be, it's a Chev!

I think you have to compare apples to apples here.

The new Chevy 1/2 2wd short box has a curb weight of 4142 lbs. Maximum Towing Capacity: 8400 lbs. Base Engine Size: 4.3 liters Base Engine Type: V6 Horsepower: 200 hp Maximum Towing Capacity: 8400 lbs.

A new Chevy 3/4 HD 2wd sb has a Curb Weight of 5402 lbs. Base Engine Size: 6 liters Base Engine Type: V8 Horsepower: 300 hp
Max Horsepower: 4400 rpm Torque: 360 ft-lbs.
Maximum Towing Capacity: 12000 lbs.

The new 8.1 Vortec has 340 horsepower @ 4200 rpm
455 lb.-ft. of torque @ 3200 rpm

we also have a 2000 3/4 ton extended cab with the 6.0 in it and when you floor it it doesnt matter how fast your going it does a pretty good job of setting you back in the seat. But its a 3/4 ton 4x4 so racing is out, same with the 2001 crew cab dually with a 502. Man i love big engines.(even if they are my parents)

Well I will tell you this. I was driving one of our new delivery trucks. 2003 C3500 Chevy dually with a full load on it. Total weight probably right at 10k or a little more. Well this ricer guy pulls up to me in some Mazda or something and he was racing his engine. So I hit the Tow/Haul button on the truck and laid it to it. Well needless to say I beat him by about 1/2 a car length haha These trucks are Vortec 350/4L60E/4.10 gear 3500s

I was suprised and I am sure he was too Only thing is tho the 4L60Es cant take much abuse like that tho.

I have had a few people want to race my primered 71. OK its Jenna's but anyway there are a lot of kids around here with the lifted 4x4's and they think there big block will tear up my little 350. It is funny to watch them while I am blowing there doors off. I have a weight advantage. :p

Um... if it's a 3500 it shouldn't have a 350. It should have a 498 or duramax, don't think the 6.0L is availible in the 3500s.


As far as the 90's trucks with the 5.7Ls.... you better beat him.

My dad's '91 Z71 ext cab is sloooow.

Let just say I can beat that truck in my scout, which weighs more than then z71, has 3.07 gears instead of his 3.73 and has a dump truck motor with a low redline (max RPM I'd ever use would be 3800).

And the '70 with original 350v8/th350/3.07 gears can beat the scout when running good, and can smoke that z71. Emmissions stuff takes off a LOT of power. The z71 never impressed me with speed ever...

Actually, the 6.0 is standard equipment for the 3500. The 8.1 or Duramax is an option. A buddy of mine HAD a '02 dually with the 6.0......under powered for hauling, but a tad bit better on gas mileage than my 8.1.

The 8.1's do get horrible gas mileage but i can forget about that when cruisin and beatin people.

Man now you guys got me wanting to go check out what these trucks actually have in them. I wish chevy would stick to 350 or 454! hahah Now I know the 2000s that we have are a 350. Unless the sticker under the hoods a lieing. Bad thing is that I read the window sticker on the new 2003 when we got it and thought it said 350 but could be wrong there. Whatever it is it freakin gets out of the way pretty damn good loaded or not.

Oh well I still beat the ricer boy

c-tenkid, did these guys in the new trucks know you were racing them?!?! I have driven these new trucks and they are pretty darn quick. If this is in your 350 with the 3 on the tree, Im sorry I have to cry B--- S---

You have a 1000+lb weight break in your favor. Don't let him know that your truck weighs less than his or he'll want you to spot him a truck or two. I think you are selling yourself short with your horsepower expectations beause you're probably closer to 300 net than you think....but you really need to be concerned with torque more than you are with horsepower. Torque and lots of it is what our heavy ass trucks need to move quickly.

He knows his truck is considerably heavier than mine, lol...

I haven't taken the truck to a dragstrip, and i certinatly haven't taken it to a dyno, so i don't really know what it is capable of. It does a really good job of putting you back in the seat, but it is somewhat limited since i have 3.07 gears....running through a 1/4 mile stretch of road i barely get in to 3rd gear before i am out of room. I shift at about 5100rpm, which puts me at about 80mph in 2nd gear, lol. Still, when i had 1.72/1.50" vales and 8.5:1 compression on the same motor i smoked a Mazda Miata, '96 model by 2 car lenghts. Not really a fast sports car...but still a good showing for a 4000 lb truck with a mostly stock motor. Gotta love torque

i ran i guy in my truck. his 285 hp 327 5.3 did a pretty good job hanging with my 350 mods in sig. i was only playing with him at about 3/4 throttle. i have yet to open the secondaries on the edelbrock. those trucks have alot of power but they do have their limitations too

Hey guys,

I have a 2001 2500 Burb with the 496. The truck weighs around 7000 wet. The numbers of 340hp and 460lb/ft of torque are good. For a truck this size it does scoot but it is by no means a race truck....though I did tow my Chevelle back through two mountain passes in the NW and it never dipped below 80mph... they do get bad gas mileage....but I can carry a bunch....tow a bunch...cruise in style....and give a lot of non suspecting hot rodders something to think about.....
