Opinions Please: Plain Rear Window or Slider?
At this point, I know for a fact that I have to remove the back window to repair rust and repaint the truck.
I'm debating on whether to put the original window back in or put in a slider (it'd be one without the trim around it). Opinions please!

I prefer the solid rear window unless you are driving a non-a/c truck.

Solid rear window - but get one that has factory tint, not the stick on kind. Sliders are super easy to break into - happened to me twice, despite extra locks. Unless you have a truck camper always on - no need for a slider.

Re: Opinions Please: Plain Rear Window or Slider?
Some additional thoughts:
1.) I'm in Western Washington, not known to be one of the warmest or sunniest places. 2.) The truck doesn't have A/C 3.) I was thinking about putting on a canopy at some point and leaving it on. 4.) With a canopy on, really the only use of a slider I'd have is to haul long lengths of lumber.

Re: Opinions Please: Plain Rear Window or Slider?
BTW - considering the rust, I would look for a rust free southwest body if I were you. You aren't that far away from AZ, NM, etc. - check CL in those areas. $2K-$3K gets you a whole running rust free truck - save the good parts off your truck and junk the rest. Just my $.02.

Re: Opinions Please: Plain Rear Window or Slider?
No, I'm pretty set on keeping as must of the original body as possible. Overall, there isn't must rust. What you see in the picture is just surface rust and I already treated it. Around the window, it's not completely rusted out, but needs a little repair.
Also, if I go with a plain window, I'll keep the original one. It's in good shape.

Re: Opinions Please: Plain Rear Window or Slider?
My plan is to sand blast a chevy Bowtie About a foot tall by two feet wide and then tint the window really dark. I had a slider in my other truck. I liked it, but it was always a pain to open.

Solid... although I always thought a slider was cool if you had a cooler in the bed…for sodas.

Re: Opinions Please: Plain Rear Window or Slider?
I prefer the solid, especially if I'm using the bed.
I seem to remember, back in the day, replacement sliders were cheaper than solid glass... At least in my area they were.

Re: Opinions Please: Plain Rear Window or Slider?
Yes, I've heard that too. But considering my glass is in good shape, and as long as I don't break it getting it out, solid glass for me is much cheaper. ($0 versus whatever a slider would cost).

Re: Opinions Please: Plain Rear Window or Slider?
I put a slider in my 72 and love it ,I wish my 74 stepper had a slider in it ,maybe one day .And you can make them hard to break into by putting a small metal rod on each side in the track ,the window wont open.

Re: Opinions Please: Plain Rear Window or Slider?
I like a slider.....
A solid window can be just as easily broken into if the thief is determined to get in. Plus, those old door locks are pretty easy to slim-jim open too. I just don't think theft deterrent is major factor of slider vs solid...

No A/C on mine, so I'm for the slider. Open the slider, open the floor vents, ....

Re: Opinions Please: Plain Rear Window or Slider?
I hated that anything in the bed would blow into the cab at highway speeds with it open. Latches won't break on a solid glass either

Solid, looks a lot more clean looking with some dark tint and a fresh gasket.

Re: Opinions Please: Plain Rear Window or Slider?
I have a plain on my 85 and a slider on my 86. I tinted both windows and the plain window looks better I think. I new really cared for the sliders but since that is what was in my 86 I kept it.

Re: Opinions Please: Plain Rear Window or Slider?
How about a sun roof too? Have one on 1986, stepper. It opens up in the back, kind of pop-up. Really illuminates the cab, it came with truck. Would never have thought of adding one, but like it now.
Have slider in mine, however, heavy tinted one piece is nice too. Les |
