Hard to shift from park?!?
The steering column in my 70 is getting hard to shift from park. It was real bad this winter when it was cold but now that it is warming up it is still stiff. When you pull back on it so you can pull it down out of park it is really stiff and same to get back into park. Does anyone else have this problem and know a fix?

I've had this problem too. Not sure if it's as bad as yours though. Mine would sometimes get stuck in the Park position, like going past park. Still works OK but could probably be rebuilt.

More than likely its the 44 year old grease inside the shift collar starting to solidify. the quick fix is to spray some WD40 or liquid wrench down inside it just next to the shift lever and start working the lever back and forth, it should free up.
The correct fix would be to disassemble the turn signal housing and shift collar, clean out all the old grease and reassemble with new grease. |

I sprayed some Silikroil on mine and it fixed it right up, sprayed into column and under hood.

I've sprayed mine where the lever goes into the column before and it helped.

This answer is yet another reason why I love this board.
After several weeks of increasingly difficult shifting from park, I came across this page, sprayed a liberal amount of WD-40 into the shift lever hole, and voilą, problem solved. Gear selection has never been this effortless! Well done, lads!

Mine got like that but it turned out to be the roll pin the shift lever pivots on was falling out the bottom.

Just to clarify. Is it hard to get our of park but easy to get into park?
Or is it hard going in and out of park? How about once it is out of park, does it move freely?

If the lube and adjustment dont seem to work, and the shifter lever on the transmission is hard to move or stuck. Drop the pan on the transmission and check the nut holding the Rooster Comb. I had one come loose and it jammed up in Park. I dropped the pan and retightened the 5/8 nut and all was good again...
