Disc brake conversion.... Goin well but I've got a question

On the donor axle, both calipers required a few light taps from the hammer.
now with NEW calipers, pads, and rotors, the drivers side would not go on with the new pads. pad wouldn't go on without the caliper.

Then I put the old pads on and it took a mentionable increase in taps to get it to scoot on. bolted up fine.

the passenger side similar story, except I when I put the old pads on there was a quarter inch in play between outside pad and rotor and it just fell on.

Took it to the brake shop for fine tuning. He asks why is the drivers side "stuck". I gave him the story and got a "hmmm".

Now he says he hasn't gotten the wheels off yet and he see's $300 worth of labor and undefinable amount in parts before he can even talk about brakes. My steering gearbox has punch a hole in my frame.

power steering was an aftermarket conversion. maybe that's what he sees?

Either way going to my buddies garage

Are the drivers side brakes something special or is there something staring me in the face ready for lunch?
