1961 Chevy Apache Motor Mounts
Howdy all. I'm restoring a 1961 Chevy Apache, Long Bed, Step Side. She had a 235 in her, i'm putting in a 400 SB and I'm in desperate need of motor mounts. If anyone has any ideas as to where I can find them please point me int he right direction.
Thanks All!! Gene Springfield VA. |

Re: 1961 Chevy Apache Motor Mounts
i have seen later mounts with some spacers on top of frame put on the earlier frame. there is also a mount that mounts off of the front holes in the block (like a try 5 chev) to mount down where the 6 cyl does, looks like a wishbone. it was on ebay a few months ago.

Re: 1961 Chevy Apache Motor Mounts
There is a set of original '60-'62 V8 motor mounts for sale in the '60-'66 classifieds here on the forum. They are hard to find and they are spendy. If it were me I would modify a set of '73-'87 engine mount brackets to fit the early frame. Those engine mounts are a better design. If you don't have the means to modify those, consider the '67-'72 small block engine mount brackets.
Here is a pic of the '67-'72 small block brackets in a '62 GMC frame.

Re: 1961 Chevy Apache Motor Mounts
I have been around awhile and never seen those mounts. I had a 62 fs/lb completely stock (years ago) with a 283 and it was front mounted just like my 61k10. had the horseshoe mount. were these mounts special?

Re: 1961 Chevy Apache Motor Mounts
Those side mounts were only used on the '60-'62 trucks with an auto trans. With the front horseshoe mount and an auto trans the engine would not be stable side to side.

Re: 1961 Chevy Apache Motor Mounts
Because the 61 & 62 standard trans bellhousing has two engine mounts and a hyd slave cyl attached to it. The stick trucks have a rear crossmember located about even with the firewall and the auto has a single point mount at a rear located crossmember. The reason why is cost it was likely cost effective to use a front engine mount for both the V8 and 6 cyl.

Re: 1961 Chevy Apache Motor Mounts
they did change in 63-66--tks had the side eng mounts with the bell housing mounts. did the 63-66 4x4 have side eng mounts?

Re: 1961 Chevy Apache Motor Mounts
I hope I can cut my question in here too. My 61 came with the mounts that are shown in captainfabs picture under a 350. They were welded onto my frame and I removed them before installing my 83 half ton crossmember for disc brakes and such. I now have done some trading and scored a 396 bbc and I am wondering if the 83 motor mounts will work for the 396. I understand that I will need to put in spacers or cut the mounts down a bit. Thanks guys.

Re: 1961 Chevy Apache Motor Mounts
Yes those engine mounts will bolt up to your 396. Those engine mount brackets from the crossmember to the frame, will be much taller than your '61 frame. If you could find those from a C20 or C30 they will fit better, but will still need a spacer on top of the frame. Just not as tall of a spacer as with the C10 brackets. If you bolt the engine mount brackets to the crossmember in the original '83 location, the engine may sit too far back for head/valve cover to firewall clearance.

Re: 1961 Chevy Apache Motor Mounts
Ok, hopefully someone may be able answer me this insane riddle, where do I find a place that sells new mounts for this bracket??? I CAN NOT find anywhere that does. And my frame does not have the side mount for the engine but the bell housing for a manual tyranny with the two mount on it. I'm really wanting to keep the original mount.
If anyone one know where I can find/buy a new motor mount I will be ever so grateful, thank you. |

Re: 1961 Chevy Apache Motor Mounts
There is a place that will re-build it (steel rubber)? you have to send your old one to them.

Re: 1961 Chevy Apache Motor Mounts
I used a horseshoe mount on my 327 with a TH400 and as Captainfab said, you could easily rock the engine side to side. I had to weld in brackets on the side of the engine to make it drivable. Also, some power steering or accessory brackets may use the same holes the horseshoe mount uses. My old 327 doesn't have drilled heads so I don't know any way to mount a power steering pump with my setup. I'll switch to side engine mounts eventually.
