Truck Hauler Preference

Hey guys I wanted to know what pickup you like to use when you put your 67-72 on a trailer. Also how comfortable is the hauling truck on your trip to shows, cross country, or around town. Just to give a good idea of what I should look for.

I sometimes use the wife's Tahoe and sometimes my avalanche with no problems & enjoyed the drive & ride the Tahoe a little more so don't know why but I did?

Re: Truck Hauler Preference

Only fitting you tow it with a duramax! I've had 2 now and will never buy anything but. The tow and ride is great with more power then needed. I've now had an 06 lly and now an 09 lmm (emissions deleted). I've also towed with my old half ton 5.3 and it'll do the job but there is no replacement for the duramax/Allison combo. Ill stand behind my gm vehicles till they pull the plug on me. Cool thread, I'm curious what other people will say.

Just to stir things up, here is what I use. I'm not brand loyal except when it comes to 67-72 trucks.

I have a 06 GMC Sierra with a Duramax. It gets 20mpg on the Highway and pulls my 24ft enclosed car trailer like its not even there.

Re: Truck Hauler Preference

I used my 70 3/4 ton GMC with the 402 in it for a long time. Would still have it if it weren't for the kid. We're a "Dog-in-the-truck" family, not a dog in the bed family so we didn't all fit in the regular cab.

Back in '04 it and my '95 Impala SS went down the road for an '02 GMC 2500HD extended cab short bed 4x4 with the Duramax/Allison combo. And as mentioned before, hard to beat that combo towing. I occassionally pull a 29 foot gooseneck and while I won't say it fells like nothing is back there, it's a hard package to beat.

The 06 duramax. Loved the way it towed even in excess of 12k

The 09 with a scap load. Haven't pulled a ton of weight with this one but can't imagine it will disappoint.

Re: Truck Hauler Preference

I've had 3 BB Vortec 454's in the past for my tow rig a 2000-ccsb, and two 99-sub's, all with 373 gears, now I have the 05 Duramax with the Allison 5 speed rclb with 373's, nothing like going from 12 mpg to 19 mpg for the same loads, which is my boat and car hauler. If you can find one with the 373 gears you will be happy with it much more than 410's. John

Duramax dually. Pulls our 14,500#, 36' 5th wheel anywhere and on any grade without breathing hard. I had an '02, now have an '06 and will be getting a '15 soon. I wouldn't pull any significant load with anything else.

Re: Truck Hauler Preference

This is my theory. I think anything between a 4.8 and 5.7 ls or original 5.7 can handle the job. But it would be maxing out the power and a real loss of mpg of 4.8 or 5.7. I think a 6.0 lq4 or like someone else said a 454 Vortec would do the job great and probably not suffer power or as much mpg wise. The one thing I do a Duramax would do the job in its sleep. Now that all being said the main purpose behind this truck would also be my driver during snow, rain, and like I said traveling with a trailer. My question is this which one gas engine or diesel would be easier or better to sit for weeks or months at a time.
