Sandblasting media

After getting prices to have my frame sandblasted, I've decided to build my own media blaster. Always wanted one anyway. What type of Eco friendly media should I use? I'll be blasting the frame, suspension parts, drive shaft, etc. And maybe some of the body panels.

Re: Sandblasting media

There is no Eco friendly media blasting process. All types have their issues but sand would be more earth friendly but you must wear an air respirator because it WILL damage your lungs. Coal slag is quick but very bad on the lungs and not a natural element in the ground.
Soda blast changes the PH level and salt levels in the ground dramatically you may end up with a crop circle when you do it and steel grit will leach rust and other metals into the water table. Walnut shell doesn't do well on rust scale. Carbide impregnated plastic pellets the birds will eat and get sick.

So pick your poison and go to it. its a very dirty job.

Re: Sandblasting media

I've had a few things blasted in the past, but I never asked what the guy what he was using for media. If I can do this, I'm thinking of making a mobile sandblasting unit I can mount on a trailer. I already have a 450 gal, 2 stage duel head compressor with that I can mount a gas, or diesel, motor on. And a 30 gal compressor tank I can convert to a presser pot.
Maybe I'm dreaming to big, but for 10 years now I've been trying to figure a way to make enough money to get off of SSDI and still not kill myself in the process.

Re: Sandblasting media

those new dustless ones that use water are cool and if you lay down plastic on the ground clean up is easy

Re: Sandblasting media

I want to thank everyone who took the time to answer my questions here. However, I found out yesterday that the "Compressor" I have isn't a compressor at all. It's actually a vacuum pump. Looks just like a compressor, but doesn't pump. It SUCKS!!!. lol
So, I guess I need to find another way to make money.
