Bought another '78 Diesel - 54k miles

I just scored big time today. This truck only has 54,093 original miles! I'm so stoked. I forgot to take pictures of under the hood, but the zinc-cad plating is still on the master cylinder cap and wiper motor. The trucks under body is in amazing condition. No rust or dents anywhere.

She is well optioned with ZY5 decor package (the Holly green was repainted at some point and they didn't replicate the hood stripes), G80 locking rear diff, PA6 styled wheels, A/C, cargo lamp, and an inside bed tire mount.

Nice to see someone taking things seriously, and living green.

None the less it looks like a time capsule I would love to own. Especially the rims.

Re: Bought another '78 Diesel - 54k miles

I dragged my posterior and called on that this morning. I should have looked at it earlier in the week. I bought a 1 ton 4x4 and I wanted that to recab it with. Oh well. I was even thinking about selling the Vectors and contacting you about the Olds and the T400. That AC cab and clip would have been nice on my truck. At least it went to a good home.

The photo of the bottom of the door, does that not show the door rotted out with rust?

Did you get the PA6 wheels with the deal or just the aftermarkets that are on it now?

Yeah that Silverado was still there. The asking price was $2200 I think. Which was also a good deal. And it had the PA6 wheels on it.

No, I just got the Vectors with it. Which, honestly, I'd rather have any day over the PA6 wheels. I've wanted a set of Vectors for years.

Cort. What do you northwesterners do hoard those 70's low mileage trucks? 54, 000 miles and a diesel too, in that shape? What a find.
Well, what are you going to do with it?

Right now I am getting her running and then a really fine detail job. She'll need tires too. And since my brown truck just got hit last friday, I think she'll be my new daily driver until the brown truck gets fixed.

Re: Bought another '78 Diesel - 54k miles

So I spent some time today troubleshooting the injection pump. The guy I bought it from said that the shop told him it needed a new injection pump. Well, when I tried to bleed the injectors, no fuel came out but the lift pump was working fine. That told me that maybe the fuel shut off solenoid wasn't energizing. I pulled the injection pump cover off and put 12 volts to the solenoid. Sure enough, nothing happened! So tomorrow I am going to put in a known working solenoid and I think she'll fire right up….

Also, as a +++++, the build sheet is still tucked into the seat springs!!

I'm pulling the seat tomorrow and getting it out to photo copy and preserve it. So excited.

Thanks buddy. No original wheels. I think he had them on the '77 Silverado he had at his place for sale.

Re: Bought another '78 Diesel - 54k miles

Nice catch Cort! I drove to Bend last fall to look at this truck. Really nice, but I wanted a short bed, and was a bit leery of a non running diesel. In hindsight, I probably would have been better of buying it!

Make sure to keep us posted on your progress!

Can I ask what you had to give for it? I offered him $1,200 - hopefully you did better than that after it sat for another 8 months.

Re: Bought another '78 Diesel - 54k miles

If i remember correctly, i think the passenger door needed a bit of work. Looked like it had been reskinned at some point, and needed some blending at the top seam.

Since you know something about these 5.7 diesels, what is going on with the plumbing on the drivers side of the motor? It looked like they had replaced some return lines or something with a bunch of rubber hose and clamps?

You are right. The factory return line connections are plastic and brittle. So I'm guessing someone was changing an injector and broke them and made up the rig that is there now.

Missed that. Which is fine. That one is too nice for a 455 swap.

You're right about the door. I looked at it after your said that and it definitely has has a new skin installed. Maybe a long long time ago because everything has a lot of age to it. That's why the pic I took above looks like rust but is actually seam filler.

Re: Bought another '78 Diesel - 54k miles

I got it fired up!!!

I changed out the shut off solenoid in the injection pump at lunch today and, after a little bit of bleeding the injectors, she fired right up! So excited. I drove it around a little bit and it is absolutely incredible how tight everything is. From the shifter to the brakes, everything feels brand new.

Stand by for the video….
