Did I buy too much bench vise?
Yesterday I bought a 6 inch Craftsman bench vise for around $45.00 at Sears.
6 inches though....is that too much? I almost never use a vise but I figured "more was better." What say you guys? Edit: I mounted her the other day. I still need to modify the countertop (cut part of the edge off) but this was the best mounting I could do. The way it is now, it'll work for flaring the new fuel lines. I wish this thing was red or black but this was the color I got. Last edited by In The Ten Ring; 05-04-2014 at 09:51 PM. |

Re: Did I buy too much bench vise?
Not at all. I'd question the quality of a new $45 vise though.

Re: Did I buy too much bench vise?
Yeah, I can't say in all my decades of working on cars and stuff, I have ever found a vice too big. Normally it's not big enough.

Re: Did I buy too much bench vise?
6" vice is kinda small actually. Mine is a 9" and needs to be bigger sometimes.

You guys must do some hardcore work in your garages! I think mine will take 3/8" mounting bolts....is that what you guys found your Craftsman takes? |

Re: Did I buy too much bench vise?

Re: Did I buy too much bench vise?
There's no such thing as too big of a vise. It's like having too much fun. Not possible...

Re: Did I buy too much bench vise?
69.....
I would have loved to seek out a vintage model on craigslist or a new Wilton but the funds and time were just too limited. Hopefully this Craftsman 6" will do for me. I almost never use a vise anyway so hopefully it will. |

Re: Did I buy too much bench vise?
You will find yourself using that vise all the time and wonder what you did without it.

Re: Did I buy too much bench vise?
That is just a little feller. I have both a 12" and a 18" vise, both are about two days younger than God.

Re: Did I buy too much bench vise?
I like the larger old ones with the pipe jaws in them. New vices are like new anvils...not too great.

Re: Did I buy too much bench vise?
That is a MANS vice right thur. One of the biggest downfalls of being in rented space; no ability to install a REAL vice. I want a blacksmith style freestanding vice anchored to the floor, but thats a no-no. Stuff like bending some sheetmetal brackets is made 1000 times easier with a good bench vise.
