Question Alternator & Starter wiring question

I am piecing back together a '73 GMC that was apart when I got it. The engine is just about ready to go back in.

Before I drop the engine in I need to get the wiring straight. At some point in time the pickup had an HEI distributor installed. So it is no longer a "points" system. This first image shows the wire loom at the alternator. The plug and red wire with round terminal are easy enough, but there is a mustard yellow wire that terminates here, the one at the tip of my finger in the image. Where does this wire go?

Now, following the wire loom on down to the starter. The large red wire is obvious, it goes to the large stud on the solenoid. That leaves a brown wire, a black wire and two mustard yellow wires. One of these mustard yellow wires goes along the frame back towards the fuel tank. I assume that is the fuel gauge wire. So, that leaves one black, one brown and one mustard yellow wire at the starter. Where do these three wires go?

Thanks for any help anyone can provide.

Re: Alternator & Starter wiring question

Is the wire at the hei module your tach feed?

Are the ignition switch wires already attached to the starter?

Re: Alternator & Starter wiring question

The engine is not in the truck, thus, the starter is not there. What you see in the images is what I have to work with.

Re: Alternator & Starter wiring question

I found a wiring schematic in the search tool. I am doing an LS swap in my truck and the engine was out when I got it. Most of those wire go to the block below the brake booster.

Re: Alternator & Starter wiring question

Somebody on here has a full collection of wiring diagrams on here. Can't remember who though

Hatzie was the one who kindly scanned and uploaded all of the manuals and diagrams. http://67-72chevytrucks.com/vboard/s...d.php?t=545416

When I asked "where do these wires go", what I meant was "where do they attach to the solenoid". Sorry if that wasn't clear.

As for wiring diagrams, that was the first thing I searched for here and on Google, but they can't help since it has been converted to HEI. It is my understanding that when a vehicle is converted, some of these wires are no longer needed. I just need to know which ones to hook where and which ones to not use. I was hoping someone here had done this conversion before and knew where the different color wires hooked up to the solenoid and which were eliminated. And that one wire that ends at the alternator has me stumped as to what it is for.

Re: Alternator & Starter wiring question

Converting to HEI only eliminates the resistor wire feeding the hot side of the coil. I've never changed any wires at the starter for an HEI swap.

One other thing I noticed in your first pic. Dump that Scotchlock. Those things are troublemakers. They invite corrosion, they cut some of the strands more times than not. If that wire needs on there solder and shrink tube.

I have no idea what that red wire is connected there for. It will be eliminated when I get the new alternator plug to replace that old corroded plug.
