200r4 tranny

can someone make a list or point me to a web site that says what the 200r4 came in? i was thinking if i went to a auto action and found a beat up car i could buy it, jack the tranny and throw the rest away. or go to junk yard and drop one out

I had a 1982 Olds Custom Crusier Wagon 20 years ago with that trans. It was junk. Never shifted right and the owners manuel said not to pull a trailer of much weight. Stay with a 350 or 400 turbo or a 700R4 that has been rebuilt right. The later model 700R4 the better. the first ones were as bad as the 200... I might also add that some Vegas had them after the Powerglide was history.

I've been reading quite a bit about the 200-4R lately.......I've been thinking about this swap myself.
Some of these trannys had to be good to stand up behind the turbo Buick motors......I just haven't figured out which ones are good and which ones to stay away from.....or if there's any difference.
The link above lists all the trans tag codes. The ones in bold print are the ones that were put in "performance cars" (if you can call a Monte Carlo SS with a 305, a performance car). Whether or not there was anything "special" about these transmissions, I don't know.
I've read where a stock 200-4R ran with no problems behind 500+ horsepower but then there are those that go south, with very little wear, behind a stock V-6. There doesn't seem to be much consistency in the quality of the parts.
I posted a message at turbobuicks.com asking which trans to look for. When I get a response, I'll post here.

Don't be down on these cars too much...my brother has one and the thing friggin rips for what it is! His quickest time bone stock was a 14.9....BONE STOCK. That alone would outrun alot of the trucks on here. With the addition of ONLY headers and cat back exhaust, he dropped to a 14.4 ET. Not bad for a heavy a$$ "wimpy" 305. That dang thing takes my mildly modded 350 apart all the time.......d'oh!

Any Monte Carlo with OD should be a 200 4R, and any OD car with a Buick, olds, or Pontiac engine would also be a 200 4R
