power steering delete

I want to delete the power steering on my truck. Its a 61 with a swapped in 305 and 700r4. The steering column, pump and gear box are all off a mid seventies Chevy truck (previous owner did all of it). How would i go about deleting the powering steering without changing column? i don't mind not having power steering (my 68 or 71 didn't have it) and i like not having the pump hanging off the motor. any help would be appreciated. also my buddy has a 59 with manual steering and a 350, could we swap setups? His truck has the factory column though.

thanks!

Re: power steering delete

It is hard to say for sure with not seeing what you have and how the conversion was done, but you should be able to switch the power steering box for a '67 and up manual box.

Re: power steering delete

If you have V belts, it's not a problem, drop off the pump and brackets and you're done. If you have a serpentine belt, you'll have to get a measurement of the approximate belt length you'll need and trial and error to get one to fit. I do not know of any of the later model with serpentine belts that are without PS.

As far as column and steering box go- you'll just have to do a little fab work to lengthen the column shaft after replacing the PS box with a manual.

Would be good to see pics to help identify what you are working with.

Re: power steering delete

If you use a '67 and up manual steering box as I suggested, you do not have to do anything to the length of the steering column shaft. Everything should bolt right up once you remove all the power steering components. You will have to reuse the PS adapter plate though.
