WTB: Borg Warner T85N

Looking to purchase a Borg Warner T85N 3 speed with OD transmission. Want to keep my 62 C10 a 3 speed and this seems to be the way to get a little more highway capability that will bolt right up to my stock 235. Any leads will be appreciated.

Re: WTB: Borg Warner T85N

Hi
I am looking on ebay but cannot find this model. I see a few others (mostly Ford stuff) but maybe I am not using the right search. What are you searching on to find the T85N?

Thanks

Re: WTB: Borg Warner T85N

Not sure, memory sucks but I have only seen Saginaw trans in chevy . I have two both of them bought off the board.

One used that i was told work well...........$250

The other completely rebuilt....................$650

can post pictures tomorrow, one is at the house the other at the shop.

Both over drive the rebuilt one has some of the wiring and stuff with it but not the pull handle and cable the not rebuilt is just the trans/overdrive. If I remember correctly they both have the solenoid.

The rest of the stuff is easy to find online and so is the manual. i have had a few installed in my vehicles both V-8 and sixes. After cleaning, rebuilding bearings if needed and proper adjustment of the steering column they did very well.

I would leave them in second to start off from a stop, when it hits around 17mph and they would go into overdrive then shift it to third then again it would go into overdrive. Only one shift after moving and both the 6 and the 8 would pull that without problems if he truck was not fully loaded or towing.

Let me know if you are interested otherwise I won't bother getting them out and taking pictures.

Thanks,
Steve

Hi Steve
The BW transmission was a recommendation by some members here and the folks at stovebolt. I may have a line on a rebuilt one here on Long Island, but am waiting on an email reply. If I don't get that then I will be interested in your rebuilt unit. Thanks

No, It would not have come standard in a Chevy truck. The following is from a Hemmings Motor News article:

Few transmissions can claim to be as popular with American manufacturers as the Warner T-85. From the mid-Fifties to the early-Sixties, you were likely to see it mounted behind the engines of most U.S. car makers. The helical-cut gears offered in the T-85 made it a much quieter transmission than its predecessors, which lent to its popularity as standard equipment in many three-speed applications during that time period. Some manufacturers such as American Motors and Ford added an electric overdrive, also designed by Warner, to the tail housing to make this transmission more reliable at highway speeds and more fuel-efficient. The T-85 was also the transmission that Warner tinkered with to build its most popular four-speed transmission, the T-10. The T-85 is popular with many classic car enthusiasts because it can be installed behind just about any engine size and can handle the higher torque and horsepower engines with ease. Although not used in any Chevrolets as original equipment, the T-85 will replace the weaker Saginaw three-speed with minimal installation problems.

Re: WTB: Borg Warner T85N

there were also 2 different sag 3 speeds, again for what I remember, I have the style that is used in stock car racing, with out the over drive, stronger one.
