carb
my 1964 chevy c20 has a dinky 1 barrel carb mounted to my 230 inline 6 ( would swap to a 2 barrel but mpg is already bad enough ) i have to run the choke about 50/50, fully open and it just stalls, cant seem to find any information on how to adjust my gas/air screw, fully closed once its warmed stalls it too. i do need to rebuild the carb with new seals and such and i do understand that this can be a problem, but there are not any sufficient air leaks that would cause this. any ideas? tuning tips or plans?

Probably has some dirt or scale somewhere that it shouldn't. I just rebuilt one of these carbs for my friend's 61' c-10 and they're not hard to do at all. The air/fuel mixture screw is located on the baseplate of the carb and should be around 1 1/2 turns out from seated. This setting should be close, but this won't help without a good rebuild and cleaning.

if i were you i would just go to rock auto online and get a remanufactured 1- barrel carb. they are the cheapest around. i got one from them , sent in an old core , so i kept my original carb. , the carb works great and a few adjustments and it runs great. just my 2-cents if it,s worth anything.

Just make sure your baseplate is good too. I have a 292 64 c20 and same setup. My throttle pin had worn the bushing away and caused a bad vacuum leak. Also make sure your power ball check valve under the accelerator pump isn't sized in the closed position or opened because it can dump too much fuel into the system and flood out while accelerating quickly. Get ahold of a carb sync tool to balance the carb at an idle and check your timing as well off the distributor. Around 5 degrees advanced is what I run mine at and it purrs just fine.good luck to ya pal.

I looked at some of the other threads you have and it may help to keep all your running related issues in one thread. Looking at your others I think your fuel system is junked up. It happens in these trucks and I would start with the tank and clean it, replace all the rubber lines, check the metal ones for rust and put in a good filter up by the carb. Then rebuild or replace the carb. If you don't have a good way to really clean the carb I would replace it. I would also do a compression check on this engine to make sure you are working on a good one.

Your bad gas mileage is the result of having that tiny 230 engine with a one barrel carb in a 3/4 ton truck that probably weighs at least 4500 pounds. I would contact Clifford: https://www.cliffordperformance.net/index.html and see what they have to say or do a budget ls swap into that truck and get some insight for the full rebuild truck.

If it prefers the choke on you've got a vacuum leak odds are its the gasket between bowl and the base of carby. Quick rebuild and you're off

Very low manifold vacuum can also cause the carb to like choke. If the engine is weak this can happen. That is why I suggested the compression check. If they are down it could explain some of his other issues like low power out put.
