Mustang 2 kits, coil spring?

I see on some of these kits they tell you the spring must be cut as they all come standard 13.5" length springs. I know this may sound silly to the experienced guys here, but remember I am new to this. When I tried to install my springs, as I posted on another post, I cannot bolt up the shocks. They just do not line up. When I take the springs out, mount up shock, it appears that I will have to compress the springs a good 4 inches to get them installed. Does this sound right or will I need to shorten the springs some? I know the mustang 2 kit automatically lowers the truck about 4 inches and do not want to go much lower. Just frustrating getting these springs in.

Thanks.

Re: Mustang 2 kits, coil spring?

Kit was from Southern Rod and Parts. Same kit as most places carry. Mustang 2 for 47-53. Just see on my searches that many sy you have to cut coils based on your set up. Of course, all instructions and videos never show that.

I may call them today and ask a few questions.

Re: Mustang 2 kits, coil spring?

don't worry about it.

my truk had the same issues, i called fatman and he said wait until the truck is together
all together, interior, glass, doors, sheet metal, etc... all adds weight and will bring the springs down

4 big guys standing on the frame and i still couldn't get my shocks in
i jacked my frame down from the ceiling to get my shocks in and they were stretched tight

it stayed that way through the build even with the cab, motor and trans in

it kept getting lower as i added parts and now rides with the lower a-arm level

my advise is not to worry about it. if you need it level remove the springs and install threaded rod where your shocks go

I think Ogre has a pretty valid suggestion but there is something that just doesn't look right to me on the way yours fits together. Have you got the spring in the right spot on top?

Re: Mustang 2 kits, coil spring?

Yes I even double checked that too. Fits perfect in the top. Will just wait and see what happens when I get most of it together as Ogre suggested. Just seemed odd when videos and stuff made it look so easy.

If the videos showed how hard it was to install all this stuff no one would buy any of it and we'd all take up knitting.

Re: Mustang 2 kits, coil spring?

May sound strange...is there a top and a bottom to the spring? I recall I had the same issue with my 35 Chevy. Flipping the springs over solved the problem. Called Heidts and they clued me in. Done lots of suspension work over years and never had a spring with a top and a bottom.

Re: Mustang 2 kits, coil spring?

Fought my springs as well, trying to put the shocks in was fun. Had to get the front end loader with a 2x4 on the front support and compress the front end down to install the shocks . As others have said don't cut them until all the truck weight is installed and they will settle down. As I understand you can only get small block springs rated a 300lbs or big block springs rated at 350lbs. My truck has settled down and looks fine

Re: Mustang 2 kits, coil spring?

Don't worry. My kit from fatman is doing the same thing. It's getting glower every time I add something. Dropping my LS and 4L60e last week gave it a good amount of spring compression. If you have a SBC or LS in your truck make sure you got the Mustang II v6 springs. Also make sure the spring is rotated properly. Your lower a-arm should have a stop there the end of the spring rests. I had mine rotated 180 degrees and it was bad. When I rotated the spring it fit better.
