55 chevy leaf spring shackle?

Hi, guys
I have a question on my leaf springs maybe some one can answer.
on my stock 55 second series 1/2 ton, the shackle configuration is different on the new shackle kit, then what came off of the truck originally. The shackle was facing down as you can see in the first picture. Now its facing up as you can see from the second picture. The new shackle wouldn't install in the down position. The manual also shows the shackle in the up position as well.Could the previous owner installed it in the wrong direction.Just wondering.

...I may be wrong on this, but I think I saw someone on the forum lower their rear suspension by changing the first pic (down) to the second pic (up)?

They flip the entire bracket and shackle from the bottom of the rail to the top of the rail.

Re: 55 chevy leaf spring shackle?

Hampshire,
I think I remember that as well.I thought the same thing that facing the shackle up would bring the leaf spring up around 2" therefore lowering the truck like Hampshire said.Whats funny about the new shackle kit is that when I went to install it in the down position the leaf springs was about an inch away from lining up with the shackle. So there was no way to get the eye of the leaf spring in the pin. Even the assembly manual shows it in the up position (Baffling)

Ogre,
my manual shows it that way as well.
I think whoever had the truck installed it wrong.

Someone could have reversed the shackle to raise the rear of the truck. Maybe to accommodate wide wheels or compensate for tired springs.
