Missing Neutral safety switch ?
Hopefully you guys can help me out, im working on my 71 , i just installed a brand new engine wiring harness, everything has power exept for the purple starter wire.
Now the truck has an aftermarket IDIDIT column with no column shift but a floor shift. I think it is a universal one ( cant find serial number to verify ) Either way when i turn the key to on / start i get no 12v from that purple wire, could it be because there is no neutral safety switch ? does it still need one if its a universal non colum shift truck ? |

Re: Missing Neutral safety switch ?
if the truck originally came with an automatic trans you should have a neutral safety switch, take a peek under the dash and see if you can find a pair of 12 ga purple wires coming out of the fuse box towards the steering column, it should be bundled with a dark/light green pair and an orange and white pair, for a temporary fix you can jumper the two purple wires together (I would highly recommend installing a permanent neutral safety switch)

Re: Missing Neutral safety switch ?
Your floor shifter should have a provision for a neutral safety switch. Fab a jumper harness tO extend your stock purple wires to your floor shift nss.

Re: Missing Neutral safety switch ?
The truck was originally a 3 or 4 speed. Since it was not auto then there is no need for the neutral safety switch ?

Uh... You still need a nss. The floor shifter you have must have a nss provision. Just do as i mentioned above. If nothin else if you ever take it to the track it will fail safety inspection.

Re: Missing Neutral safety switch ?
What wiring harness did you use?
Was it a specific V8 & automatic application? The purple wire should run from the starter solenoid directly to the bulkhead connector. The bulkhead connector inside half should have a purple wire running (from the same pin location) to the ignition switch in a manual trans application harness. An automatic simply breaks that purple power feed with an in and out connector for the NSS. This is where and how you would extend the purple wire through the NSS in your shifter. Any automatic conversion should include a NSS to prevent unintended movement of the vehicle. Have you tried verifying power at the igniton switch connector for the purple wire? At the bulkhead connector? Are you using a schematic or did you do a wire for wire replacement?

Re: Missing Neutral safety switch ?
Sorry for the delay guys but i found the 2 purple wires under the dash , for now i just bypassed the NSW just to get this truck going, i might change the IDIDIT to a stock one but not sure.
last few questions maybe you guys can help me out with. Have i correctly categorized these wires ? These are on the passengerside, and its new engine wire harness - Purple eye lid is the starter switch on - Yellow one i can cancel ? That was to be used with points only not HEI ? -12 v source for distributor ? |
