Old boaters trick is to soak the inside of a boat with linseed oil, It darkens up with time and looks old but while being preserved it will not scratch or chip as it is in he wood not on it like clear.

Re: how to fake your wood

Just curious if you put anything on it to protect it from the elements? Even some Satin SPAR varnish might help it keep this look for much longer than without it. I'm thinking you might see a little snow in Canada?

I'm not a wood expert by any means. Why the black? I can't say I have seen oak that is black.

just to darken the grain in the wood wasn't really going for oak as per say but more so for a old wood look when oak is left out in the weather it get pretty dark just looking to do something differant going to coat it in lacquer today will post later

Re: how to fake your wood

I can't really say it looks like oak. I only know a few types of wood; new, rotted, fire, and too expensive. But I do like the way it looks.

Re: how to fake your wood

That's actually a very nice look. A while back I discovered that you can make Poplar look almost exactly like oak for a fraction of the cost. I did this with a couple of custom picture frames I made. I didn't want to shell out the money for real oak so I settled for Poplar. I just stained it with red oak stain and I was very surprised. Most of the people that have seen them think they are oak until I tell them differently. Probably not much help if you desire the "Worn in" sort of look. I think the way you did yours will go nicely with the paint.

Re: how to fake your wood

Too bad you aren't closer. I have a bunch of oak. Some is weathered and some is still clean. Some was fencing and some was in the barn for stalls. I've since torn them down. I'm thinking of using some in my bed but I'm no wood worker. I'll need somebody to do the notching and planing.

So are you notching or just laying the strips over the boards?
