2005 Silverado power steering issue
I have a 2005 Silverado 5.3L 4 wheel drive. Ever since I purchased the truck (used 40K miles) the power steering seemed hard to turn at low speeds. Last year (75K miles) while backing into a parking spot it felt like I lost power steering. It was a dead wheel and only came back after I gave it some gas and increased RPM. I replaced the power steering pump with a NAPA one. It squealed and did the same thing. Took the pump off returned it and got another one. This one hums and still does the same issue. I asked a garage and they said it’s the GM problem and they did not know of any fixes. Again the issues are at low speed only under 5 miles per hour. Only after I increase the RPM does the power steering seem that its there.
Anyone else have this issue or know how to fix it?

Re: 2005 Silverado power steering issue
I would assume it is your steering gearbox, but I wouldn't say that I'm anywhere near 100%sure. That is just my first guess. There are only 3 major parts in your power steering system, and those would be pump, hoses, and gearbox. Your pump.must not be the issue, and unless the system leaks alot it wouldn't be the hoses, so your last option is the gearbox hope this helps!

Re: 2005 Silverado power steering issue
It is, unfortunately, not as simple or cut-&-dry as those components. If you have hydroboost brakes, that unit needs to be taken into consideration. Additionally the steering system has an electronic variable orifice that changes pressure delivered at different speeds.
I have attached a pdf of the associated TSB for increased steering effort at low speeds.

Re: 2005 Silverado power steering issue
My '06 Silverado K2500HD was a bear to turn when I first bought it (spring of 2010), and it had worn out oversized tires on it. The dealer I bought it from replaced the pump for my at no cost only 10 days after I bought the truck. Then when I replaced the tires a week later, it made a huge difference.
But now that those tires are getting worn it is developing a hard steer problem again. My truck also has the hydroboost. Gary

Re: 2005 Silverado power steering issue
That's a good point, I didn't think of hydroboost, my truck doesn't have it, so didn't even give it a thought
