more issues!!

ok. now that i am forced tto work on the truck. lets get down to business. how do i replace a crank shaft seal? which pulley do i remove? will the pulley just unbolt off? it is on a 283 v8. also how would i replace the oil pan seal. motor is mounted to truck! when i change oil do i put in 5 qts? thanks! for the crank seal i already removed the fa shroud, the fan blade and truck battery. what else?

Not criticizing, but, why not buy a shop manual, original, reproduction or on CD. Most of your worries and fears will disappear. One of the first books I purchased after buying my truck. It shows step by step how to do mechanical repairs.
I'm a literature nut to an extreme and I'm always baffled to see someone buying an older vehicle and not buying the books to go along with it.
Though if you'd like to argue the point that if I took the money I've spent on literature my truck would probably be on the road. lol

well it is not that.if i could get my hands on a BOOK i would, i don't want a cd. that is all i can find. if i do find a book they are way too costly!

What do you consider "way too costly"? I see one for 48.00 shipped to your door....

Seems pretty cheap versus a tow job because you didn't have the complete info when performing the job.

You are going to need a manual and since the small block is the same for many many years you can use the info from a later manual. A local library is a place to start. Also there are a few good you tube videos to help out. You will need a puller for the damper. I reccomend cleaning the pan and front cover good before starting and run the engine to find out exactly where the oil is coming from. I have seen folks change a rear main seal only to find out the oil pressure sender was leaking. Knowing exactly where the leak is helps do the correct fix. What ever you do don't use the blue silicone. It will cause issues. Use the black. It is much better and wont soften up.

Do note that a 283 lacks the balancer retaining/installation bolt in the crank snout.

Rear seal and pan on an I6 but same procedure for 283.

PS-highly recommend BluGoo...its Gods own sealant! Naysayers are blasphemers.

If ya decide to use a gasket sealant tell no one here. There is a near irrational fear against its use thats nearly as silly as giant tires and a laid out frame. Ye'll read tails of 40eleven hundred torque diesel compression 87 octain mouse motors with spun rod bearings due to a floating chunk of goo when the real reason is failure to fit the bearing in the first place. Gasket goos are fine to help old warped tins seal when used appropriatly.

Read the Manual.

A lot of the parts vendors sell reprinted manuals... or you can still find 'em used.

It will cost you more in aggravation and broken parts in the long run, by not having one to look things up in. They don't cover everything, but there is a lot of information in there that you can use.

the factory used it sparingly. most people make a big mess with it that makes it harder for the next guy.

My truck is scheduled for an honorable end with dignity. Cremated with me. That way no next guy to chop it down or hogg it up wif getto wheels. Meantime, BluGoo keeps us rollin.
