Finally getting to the Wiring
So, after years of complaining how hacked up the harness is in my truck, and after two years of staring at the box of the EZ harness I bought, I decided to take the plunge and start wiring up my truck. I also figured (if i remember to take photos of the whole process) I would do a mini thread to show you how I am doing it, and you guys cant tell me where I go wrong
I started by grouping the wires into more slimmed down sections then what comes pre-grouped. I am hoping to get the rest done this weekend, but I did start with my gauge cluster. Pics below. However, I do have some questions on the wiper switch. Does anyone know which tabs I use if I am not putting in washer? Last edited by luckyss; 05-15-2014 at 07:31 PM. How can you post from Flickr or similar without uploading, or is uploading no longer an issue? |

Re: Finally getting to the Wiring
I'm doing that now so those will be the next set of photos. I just did the engine and ignition so if I need to move the truck I can hook up the battery and drive it.
So far I like the EZ harness. But there are two things I'm not happy about. Where I placed my fuse panel (close to stock) the ignition wires were about 3 inches too short. I know planning could have fixed it, but I knew it was going to be short, and am adding wires. Just a comment on the harness. The other issue is how the wires are close to the fuse panel. They are sloppy for my taste. I went through all the wires beforehand and regrouped more so than the provided groups to get further organized I'm sure if this was the mistake or not, but the way they have these three loops are going to make it easy to make look good after I need to dress it all up. I am not too worries about it, as my end goal is to add a bulkhead adaptor so I can disconnect the engine and light harnesses when I do a tear down for a repaint. If I can't get it to look the way I want now, I should be able to do it once these wires are cut short. |

Re: Finally getting to the Wiring
So I have the harness in the engine wired and tested, I did not dress it all in yet, but I did finish up the loom heat shrinking and laid the wires where they will go, once I complete all of the wiring, I will head back and dress it all in.
This is the engine harness coming out of the firewall. Here is the first split of the harness, where it has the distributer wiring going up, and the starter wires heading down the back of the engine. Although I am only using the temp sender wire, I left all of the other items such as oil pressure, AC Electric Choke etc, neatly tucked in some wireloom. Not sure where I am going to hide it but I might just have it go back through another plug in the firewall and tuck it under the dash for now. Here is the Temp Sending wire all hooked up: |

Re: Finally getting to the Wiring
I agree with your dilemma about wire routing. I have the same decisions and I also have included the main mods in my truck, alternator upgrade, lighting relays, electric cooling fan, and gauge cluster swap. Where do I route the wires and what do I use for loom cover, that's my puzzle.
You can find a complete diagram for the 67 to 72 trucks in the sticky posts in the electrical section. It is just for the stock wiring though, so it helps, but more is needed. There are better breakdowns that I have posted many many times. So if you need something just ask. I am glad you're willing to make an auto cad drawing and maybe the mods will put it in the FAQS. Here is one on the gauge cluster. It is different than yours because you are hand wiring yours, but the wires are run the same.

Re: Finally getting to the Wiring
Vettevet thanks. I hope it is helpful once it is complete. I saw the original and it is proving most helpful for me, not sure if anyone has the original CAD for it still bit that world help me out in creating the EZ wiring one.
Truckdude - the are Autometer ProComp Ultra Lites. I had the gauge bezel for a year or so before I decided to cut the dash and install it. I figured there isn't anything left stock on my truck as it was. Originally when I painted it I had shaved the dash pad off, and the hole for the radio was already cut when I bought the truck so what's a few more pieces cut up. You can still go back to stock dash after cutting the headlight and wiper tabs off but I doubt I'd ever go back anyway. My truck is a Frankenstein of parts from all years and nothing is original. |
