196? crew cab

So a friend of mine knows I was thinking about converting a regular cab into a crew cab and what does he happen to see in a field?

He says it is ROUGH. Floors are shot, body does not look too bad, needs several windows, it is a full frame off job. He told me if it was a regular cab it would almost not be worth buying and trying to save. I am going to go take a look at it, I am just not sure what to offer the guy on it. It has been sitting where it is for 10+ years. If I were to guess I am going to have 100+ hours in making a crew cab, modifying the frame, and everything else associated with it so having one to start with will save an untold number of hours. What would the scrap value be, $300 or so?

Re: 196? crew cab

Scrap is probably twice that. Even if it needs floors replaced, I'd say $600-$800 would be a fair offer, but obviously try and get it as cheap as you can. Cool find and thanks for sharing!! Nice old 64-66 GMC crew cab.

A 100 hours, really, can I drop my truck off for some work to be done, haha. I would pay a 1000 for it like that.

Re: 196? crew cab

You guys did see the + sign after I said 100 hours right? That means I am guessing 100 hours minimum, I didn't say I would have a show truck completed in 100 hours.

You know I have seen that truck on this site before. I think it belongs to someone on here. And I think people have offered to buy it. Not 100% sure but like 98% sure it's the same truck

Re: 196? crew cab

i would say what ever a ton and half of scrap is worth where its at ..... go from there as to how much work you might save on this VS doing a stretch ......one thing to remember is if you do your stretch you can get more leg room in the rear if you want it and you could also have a full length bed just some things to think about

Make sure to ask if the tree was a factory option.

this first shot I saved to my computer in 2010, and the other 4 I saved in 2012....
been sitting a while... hope someone could save it!
the 3 crew cabs that I have actually had a real chance to buy sold for between 1500+ 800 gas, 2500, and 4500, of course I have never had that much cash laying around....
they were in around this condition....

Re: 196? crew cab

Most likely there is a reason it's been sitting so long:
A it isn't for sale
B it's not going to be bought for "scrap metal" pricing
C the owner is going to "fix it up someday"

You can thank all these fantastic car shows for the convoluted prices on old vehicles. The market here in the midwest is a bit repressed from other regions, just not ringing the big bucks everyone is asking, these days.

Also funny to note that the comments from those who can't buy it are "not worth much" but if it were their's, they'd be asking premium price.
Not based on condition, but on what it is, I would think if it could be bought for $1000 it would be a deal. I am sure certain conversions are worth more than others, depending on who did them. It has to be considered, when setting a value that GM NEVER made a single truck like this- they were all done in the aftermarket, so in a sence, they are all custom builds.
I've done a crew cab cnversion, and as most do, I also got in way over my head and came close to basically ruining 2 good trucks. I recoverd and finished the truck enough to sell it. The amount of work involved is tremendous and the detail work is what will make or break it.

I may b able to retrieve a few pics, our computer recently died a slow and painful death, taking years of documents and pictures to the grave with it.

The basic concept, was I used a 64-66 cab for the front, a 60-62 for the rear. I removed the front 8" off the of the '62 doors to make the rear doors. The '62 cab was cut straight down from the bottom of the "dogleg" or bottom corner of the winshield. The angle of that A pillar is close to the andgle of the rear of the 64-66 door, to they lined up decent with a filler panel. In my opinion, I shouldn't have cut the doors. When finaly assembled the rear seat leg room was minimal. We ended up taking about a 4"section out of the stock seat bottom to gain a little room and make it not look so cramped.

We constructed ours on a '62 chassis, I felt the X type, boxed frame was stronger for the conversion and would support the extra weight in the middle better. We left it stock wheelbase and cut the front of the bed off and attached the bed directly to the rear of the cab, much like a modern Avalanche, making a 5.5" bed. Again, another area I would not repeat, mainly for cosmetic reasons.

The current one is a simple extended cab,a 24" stretch, not a 4 door and I am starting with 2 chassis and going to build as needed front to back. I do not have a build thread, because it is actually a collaberation with another shop, so not really "my build" It's our design and vehicle, but alot of the sheet metal fab is being done by someone for us. I do know they are using the floorpan/firewall from a late model diesel truck to take advantage of the OEM sound proofingand trans tunnel clearance. It is based on a 1972 C30 motorhome chassis with a 2001 6'5L turbo diesel Allison automatic and 14 bolt dually rear axle.

There are several of these projects on here, by some really talented guys, who have built great looking trucks.

I lost the hard drive, then after they replaed that, my computer guy said my mother board was toast. They are trying to retrieve what they can onto an external drive for me. Thanks for offering to help! It is way beyond my capabilities.

This is what I do for a living, unless the platters are bad it should be able to be retrieved IMO. May I suggest a backup solution for the future???

The best $ you will ever spend if you have valuable data is with StorageCraft desktop. It isnt cheap but it is so easy to restore the whole drive or a single document.

http://buy.storagecraft.com/StorageC...p-P148C18.aspx

I have this at work and at home. I had an electrical storm nuke everything a year ago ( took out dishwasher, garage opener, 2 tv's, the alarm system AND the PC mother board/Power supply) but my data was safe on an external drive that wasnt plugged in.

Good luck to your IT guy and to you sir!
