Manual Steering Box Pop/Click Noise
Hey guys,
Long time lurker here but this is my first actual post. I recently bought a 63 big window swb and am going through the basics to keep it on the road. My steering box seems to be making a clicking/popping noise when going over some bumps at 20-30mph. At first I thought it was the ball joints but they checked out ok as well as the tie rods. My steering box is loose as hell and I can actually grab behind the rag joint and rotate it back and forth and hear the noise inside. Anybody else encounter this? Is there a way to grease the box or any remedy for the noise? Thanks! |

Re: Manual Steering Box Pop/Click Noise
Popping or clicking from suspension and steering components means two metallic objects are banging against each other....e.g. worn/broken.
Time to take the weight off the wheels and go thru the suspension and steering one section at a time, working from PS to DS and then up the column to the wheel looking for the loose/worn/broken part (s). If the upper ball joints are riveted in, assume the suspension and steering box/system is high mileage and nigh onto 50 years old......e.g. replace it and realign. It could be as simple as a failed rag joint or ball joint or as complex as worn or broken bearings and gears or galled steering shaft in the box/column. I would take the vehicle off the road pending a full inspection and at the least, R&R of all deficient components. |

Re: Manual Steering Box Pop/Click Noise
I had the same issue before I switched to power steering. As you probably guessed it, there should not be that kind of play in the steering box. If you say the joints are all good then its time to start with a rebuilt box. I had amazing results with my Lares box. They are rebuilt in the US and the price was right (Advance Auto Parts online ordered).

Re: Manual Steering Box Pop/Click Noise
Nice looking '63.
You'll notice a big difference once the box is rebuilt. Greg.
