Sound deadening

How much sound deadening material will I need to cover the cab of my truck, the fire wall, floor, and back wall. I was looking at the dynamat bulk pack it comes with 38 sqft, curious if this is enough. Does anyone have any recommendations doing this, should I do the doors too and also should I coat my floor with a rust inhibitor or something like por-15?

My ball park guess would be 45sq ft. You can also find it by length x's width of back of cab, floor, and firewall. I would imagine 38sq ft would get you pretty close. Dynamat is a sound deadnear only it will not protect the metal other then just surface water/moisture wouldn't penetrate the underneath steel

Have a read on www.sounddeadenershowdown.com before you embark on this project. What I learned there is that the "mat" products are vibration dampeners and that you only need to cover 30-40% of the meal area. The key is to add a layer of a product called mass loaded vinyl that actually blocks sound from passing through it.

This is yet another of those subjects on which we all have opinions and Im sure mine is different than a lot of folks here, but read that site and examine his data for yourself. I did and am very happy with the results.

Sound deadener deadens the panels. It does not insulate against sound (well, not at the frequencies you care about). MidLifer is right. For example, on my back wall of my cab I put an insert of mat on each of the "low" stamped areas. No need to cover the whole thing.

I used Dynamat and did the roof also, I'm very happy with what I have.

Click on my build thread and you'll see what I dead. Dynamat type material down first, closed cell aluminum backed insulation, MLV mass load vinyl, carpet insulation then carpet.

Not hard to do, but it is time consuming.

To answer your second question yes it never hurts to Por-15 the floor before you sound deaden it

My friend uses the product from homedepot in the roofing area. 60% cheaper and it wooks great for heat resistant and sound. I'll post the name of it if I can get a hold of him.

Don't forget to do the inside of the outside door skin, makes a big difference in noise levels in your cab. It also sounds better when you close the doors, a nice thud instead of a loud clang

It's called peel and seal, and it is an asphalt based substance as opposed to dynamat and second skin which are butyl based. Second Skin has thicker foil material on the backing of it vs dynamat, but they are both equally good products.

In my truck I have dampener and deadener in it, makes a huge difference.

Keep in mind if trying to use asphalt roofing stuff that the smell might be strong and hang around a lot longer than you'd like.

I used road kill and very pleased with it. I did a 12" square inside the door and then 4" squares in each corner of the doors. They shut now with a nice thud sound like a new vehicle.
I also put the bubble wrap down then the carpet.

I used dynamat extreme in the doors and it made a huge difference, mostly with the stereo cranked (eliminated vibration in the doors from my 6x9s). I used LMC's sound damping kit in the cab with so-so results.

With my vent window rubbers shot, not much can be heard over the wind noise anyway... I need to take care of that soon.

I used second skin. I am very pleased with it! I put it everywhere I could, on the gas tank, underneath the dash,under the headliner, just about everywhere! Wherever you tap on my truck, it sounds like it's plastic. Very good stuff!

The bulk pack is not enough. Doing mine right now. You will need about 4 more sheets.

I used Dynamat and very please with the results. I did the entire floor from the gas tank up to the bottom of the cowl, behind the gas tank, cab corners, inside the doors. Very little road noise, loud exhaust and I can hear the radio on low volume even at freeway speeds. I bought the 9 piece set (72 square feet) and had one sheet left over plus the scrapes. There's a few pictures in my album.

I used the peel and seal from home depot, two rolls of the 6 inch wide was plenty. That was two years ago and I have never had an issue with any sort of smell or other issues. If you look up the MSDS for dynamat and peel and seal you will find they are the same material, just slightly different thicknesses.

According to the box it has 20 sq ft in each one and I used 2 boxes of it to cover the floor and up the back wall to the window and both doors and up to the fire wall in front. I left the factory stuff in place on the fire wall. I have 2 12" peices left in the second box. That would mean 38 sq ft is what I used. I didn't cover every inch of the floor are the back wall but I did a pretty good bit!
