Old Barn wood

Okay, well my neighbor has an old barn that has some old weathered oak on the siding. The bottom of the boards are rotted but the rest looks good

If I could get it saved,cut etc


Would it be a possible good wood, for my Trucks bed?

It is in fact Oak wood..It has to be at least 50+years old or more

Well, a lot of people salvage old wood and either cut it down or cut an plane it down to the right size to use for new projects. It's probably rough cut lumber and if it is thick enough, wide enough and doesn't have a bunch of cracks I'd, give it a go. Try to get pieces with no nails or screws in them as they destroy planer knives.

How much does it normally cost for someone to cut them and clean them up? I sorta like the weathered look, but make it look a little bit better

You would need to get local pricing. Around here it goes for a premium, usually to the trophy homes in the resort areas. Old oak is not available here. Even with common woods like Fir and Pine it is cheaper to buy new and give it a distressed "old" finish (there was a thread about doing that last fall) to acheive the same look. I have done it on a number of projects.

As a wood worker I know the biggest issue with old used wood is twisting and checking. You can take an old board that looks nice and straight but the first time you rip it thru a saw or start planing it release the tension in the wood and it starts to move and ends up in the rocking chair rail or fire wood pile.

Edit: DUH !!! Turns out I can buy 7 oak boards for $105+Tax

You can usually buy red oak at lowes, but I haven't seen white. If you don't have the tools, I doubt you'll save money over a kit.

It's the same from either side... R to L or L to R.

i used some 1x12 early 1900s barn wood i had left over from my shop. i bought some bed strips from lmc and rusted them using acid.

I actually own a company that we specialize in customer furniture,, bar door hardware, bar stools, and tables using reclaimed barn wood. One of the problems that you fun into, depending on the thickness of the wood you want to use, a lot of the wood is filled with nailed and sometimes you just can't seem to get them all out. Also it's really dirty wood. We have found that a lot of shops don't want to run that wood through their saws. Before we bought all of our own high end CNC saws. We actually had to buy $250 worth of blades and they used our blades to cut our wood. Now that's probably the extreme case but some of those thick beams make some of the coolest wood when you cut them and plain them down. It all depends on what you end result is going to be but we are dealing with $1000 barstools and custom tables for 3k - 5k. So it's pretty high end. Awesome finished product though.

I had never thought about the microscopic dirt and stone pieces damaging the blades. I cut quite a bit of used wood on my trusty 10" Craftsman contractor grade saw (old cast iron one) and seem to go thru a lot of blades. I also know all about hidden nails and carbide blades, main reason I use a full face shield, I've embedded wood/metal in my cheek once and did not like it. We took down a 24" dia locust tree and hit a spike in the middle that trashed the chainsaw blade. It was covered with 12" of wood, probably used for a clothes line 30 years ago, the tree was 60 years old. I assume you are in Burley ID? I've done work in Burley and the towns around there and my kids live in Kimberly.

Yep. I'm in burley. Gotta love the small towns. My brother just built a house south of Kimberly. Kimberly and twin falls is starting to see a lot of growth in that area.

My experience has been a local hardwood supplier will be much cheaper than Lowes and you have a better chance of matching grains, etc. You can also get boards that are closer to the finish width you need and not buy expensive shim stock.

Red oak is ok it the truck is going to be a garage queen, only taken out on nice days. If
the bed will be exposed to the weather use white oak.
