Re: Can you tell if this is a L33??
I cant tell from your pic. Thought the L33 only came in 05, 06, 07 extended cabs. Get the vin number and do a vin number check. The eighth digit in the vin should be a B I believe.

Re: Can you tell if this is a L33??
I wish I could. It came out of a 05 Yukon that a tree smashed from ice storm a couple months ago. All I have is serial #s from ECM. Apparently owner is either too lazy or isn't smart enough to go stick a magnet on it for me or give me head casting #s or look at rear of the block... If he wasnt a couple hours away I'd just ride over.

Re: Can you tell if this is a L33??
it appears to be an aluminum block (unless it is dirty?).
BUT the L33's in trucks that i saw were equipped with electric fans. |

Re: Can you tell if this is a L33??
Unless the aluminum blocks were coated black-that is likely an iron block.

Re: Can you tell if this is a L33??
If the price is right, I'd buy it whether it was an aluminum L33 or not. All the 05+ (and SOME 04) engines have the stronger dimple rods and floating pin pistons. They're a great shortblock to make some power with.
Any parts store, rock auto, ebay, etc can get you intake gaskets. Intake bolts: http://www.autopartswarehouse.com/sh...rado_1500.html

I was just shopping for a donor block to test fit but was really wanting to find a lower mileage 5.3 to swap the 4.8 with. I talked him down from $750 to $500. I am seriously considering getting it. I am wondering if I can just drop the "longblock" into the 2001 chassis and fire it up and make sure everything runs correctly, just swap everything from the 4.8 onto it since I have a 2001 and its a 05 engine, I'd need to use the older intake for the egr/return line. What do yall suggest? Those intake bolts dont look correct? Also i would need 10 not 8. I cant find any parts store that carries them. Is it at all possible to just find the rubber grommet on them? Here are bolts in question: |

Re: Can you tell if this is a L33??
I've scoured ebay and found nothing.. Maybe I am searching for the wrong thing.
So whats the vote? Drop the $500 on the complete engine w/ ecm 100k miles. Upgrade from the 4.8 to the 5.3? I have been leery of the torque the 4.8 will have in my 4wd truck. I have the $, it isn't in the budget.. It will slow my build down a lil bit if I do make the purchase. |

I've got a couple spare 5.3/6.0 intakes sitting around the shop. I'll send you the bolts for $20. PM me if you want them. I've swapped 7 junkyard LS motors in my time, and never once have I had a problem with one. I wouldn't waste your time swapping it into the donor truck to "make sure it runs". lol. Regardless, $500 is a great price for a 5.3 that is that complete. Yes, the 2001 intake will swap to the 2005 engine no problem...which is good, because you'll need a place to mount the throttle cable bracket if you're staying DBC. I would delete the EGR nonsense when you have it tuned, and plug the hole in the intake. You can run the passenger side manifold from that 2005 engine, which won't have the EGR boss on it.

Here is my build thread... I am not doing just a typical standalone swap.. http://67-72chevytrucks.com/vboard/s...d.php?t=627161 I think I may just jump on this 5.3 and let my bank account hurt for a month or so... I do plan to delete egr.. I think I need a 1 3/8" freeze plug though. I want to get pcm done to eleminiate egr and cats.. You really think I could get that much $ from a 4.8?? I'd probably have to sit on it for a while to find the right buyer.. Makes it even more tempting!!! Last edited by NastyBuzzard; 05-22-2014 at 09:26 AM. |

Not sure what LS stuff is going for there....but it's climbed in price a BUNCH around here...I had a buddy about 7 years ago that literally could not give away a 4.8. lol http://chicago.craigslist.org/nwi/ptd/4477839579.html http://terrehaute.craigslist.org/pts/4465915423.html http://madison.craigslist.org/pts/4480105786.html There's a pretty good spread on prices, but if nothing else, you should be able to make at least half your money back, if not all of it. The CORE price around here is $300 on ANY LS from my local junkyard...

Re: Can you tell if this is a L33??
There is nothing wrong with a 4.8, compared to a 5.3 there is only 25-35 HP difference. the 4.8's run real well with turbos ( not that the 5.3's wont tho) and they are cheaper to get than the 5.3 usually.
I am running a 4.8 out of an 05, cam, CAI, performance tune, headers and it runs hard and still gets @20MPG, double the HP my 350 had.

Do I just swap in the 5.3 ecm, or is it more complicated than that? I found GMs part # for the bolts w/grommets (grommets dont sell seperately). Its GM #89017368 and they are around $20 for 5 of the bolts and I need 10 unfortunately. |
