Exhaust routing suggestions

Hey all,

I'm building a new exhaust system as part of the frame-off. My plan is to route it all the way back, flip the rear bumper, and put the polished tips in the license plate cutout.

Here is a top-down routing plan:

My question is . . . would you guys route it under, or through the drive-shaft cross-member? My thinking is to drill two 3.5" holes and go through it, and use a slip/clamp connector on one side so it's removable. I'd probably go through it, hook it to the flex/mesh piece I have, then to the muffler.

If I do go through the cross-member as opposed to under it, will I need to reinforce the cross-member at all in other areas?

Another question is width. I'm thinking that in the photo below, the pipe on the right gives me the width I need to avoid an inward bend near the shocks. But since I don't have the rear in I'll need to do some measuring. But based on the shock mounts it seems the width the right pipe would give would be preferred.

Any ideas/advice is appreciated.

Re: Exhaust routing suggestions

I would cut holes in the crossmember and weld in a 1" or so wide ring cut from a piece of pipe. A piece of 3.5" sch 40 pipe will be aprox 4" on the OD.

Not sure I catch your drift. Cut the hole, and then put a piece of intersecting pipe through the hole, weld it in, and then run the exhaust through the pipe? Is that what you're saying?

Thanks 66LSX for the pics. Any pics of it with the rear shocks?

Ah okay. Didn't see the pic when I responded. So add that for rigidity and run the pipe inside it.

Re: Exhaust routing suggestions

Here is plain and simple. Ramhorn manifolds with 2 inch pipe crossing under the frame at the kick-up behind the front crossmember to glasspacks under the cab and out the back.

Re: Exhaust routing suggestions

Mine is run inside the frame but hang down about a half inch below the frame. They are right next to the frame and make jacking it up a pain because I like having the cup of the jack fully on the frame. I will be cutting into the cross memeber and doing the pipe welded in thinggy when I get mine redone.

Re: Exhaust routing suggestions

More pictures from other users I had saved from here that influenced my decision... (some directly... some indirectly) I decided to go with the --thru crossmember' inside the frame rails option... with an H pipe--

Re: Exhaust routing suggestions

I moved the panhard bar and the shocks to make room for the 3" exhaust.

I'm guessing ( speculating ) that the mufflers at the end of the system eliminate that horrible vibrating drone from the huge 3" pipe?? Would love to hear it when its done! What mufflers are those?
