Pics of 348/409 powered trucks
Leaning towards purchase of good used 348 and would like to know how difficult it would be to swap out my very tired 230, anything special needed to be done to get it to fit etc?
Thanks |

Re: Pics of 348/409 powered trucks
Make sure to have a healthy amount of money for the 348 parts as I'm finding. Most parts are more expensive than the big block parts I'm finding, but it will fit in no problem.

Re: Pics of 348/409 powered trucks
Didn't even catch that in the pic, but you are correct. I got the 348 up off the ground and installed in the fleetside for the time being. It will let me mock up what I need to, but will have to come back out after the step side is done for rebuild.
This is set in the rear holes, but due to very tight clearance issues on the pass side, I will more than likely move it to the forward holes for final install. I will also go to the CPP tubular mounts as the factory 63 perches do not like the cast iron manifolds. They will work, but would require some very minor trimming to make them work. I plan to run headers anyways, so I'll be going to the CPP mounts.

Re: Pics of 348/409 powered trucks
If I ever found a rebuildable core for a sane price, I'd love to do a 348 in my 64 C10. Awesome old school hotrod engine.

Re: Pics of 348/409 powered trucks
A few more pics of the firewall clearance. The rear position could be used with a little massage on the pass side, but the engine will slide forward for my build. Plenty of clearance on the dist cap....even for a large HEI cap.
Guys running automatics....are you using the forward or rear mounting positions on the frame for clearance? Will the engine in the rear position leave enough clearance for the Powerglide?

Re: Pics of 348/409 powered trucks
Couple of pics a 348-409 forum member sent me for some inspiration.....what a great clean looking truck. Thought I'd share the pics...
Exact look I want, minus aluminum intake and headers.

Re: Pics of 348/409 powered trucks
Talked with the guru's on the 348/409 forum about this truck. They agree its a 348 engine in the truck. Seems that a lot of the truck 348's used the same 6qt oil pan as the 409's with the dipstick on the passenger side.

Got the engine set forward and on the new CPP mounts Sunday. Cleaned up all my fitment issues minus the exhaust which I'm still working on.

Re: Pics of 348/409 powered trucks
not to tell you what to do with your build, just a suggestion. why not move it forward just enough to have clearance at the rear. the 348's are heavy and you are moving the eng forward by quite a bit. tks are already nose heavy. don't know if you could move the mounts just a little forward. however you do it, it will be a great addition to your f/s.

Re: Pics of 348/409 powered trucks
so is the PG trans cast iron or alum? in your pics it looked like the early iron one. I would up grade to the later one or just go th350. here i am again telling you how to do things, don't mean to as you know what you are doing. If you use the early trans there is a ck valve that goes in one of the trans lines. this is not stock. don't remember all the details, but keeps the trans from leaking. converter bleed back. do a search on the net, should be info out there.

Re: Pics of 348/409 powered trucks
The one I have is the original 58 cast iron powerglide beast that weighs around 250lbs. I will be going to a newer aluminum version when I find a decent one around here that's not all beat to hell. Guy called me yesterday with a 67 impala that he just removed one from, but he wants $400 and unsure of condition inside. I'm in no rush, so I'll keep looking.
I'm about 75% set on a powerglide, but if it was anything else....I'd probably go with a th400. I know these are not the popular choices, but they are what I want. And thanks for your input and ideas......no offense taken at all and I'm ok with criticism also.
