My dream truck

I'm new to this side of the form, I have a 86 chevy so I have been on that side for 3 years now but as of march I have found my dream truck a 72 short box. The guy I bought it from bought it on ebay from North Carolina in 2008 shipped it up to Manitoba Canada and threw it in a container fast forward to this last March I found it on kijiji and snapped it up. I will also mention it has 71,000 original miles. all I have done to it is replaced the moldings and grill.

since I bought this truck I have done a lot of research about these things and have a question since this is a Cheyenne it has a few options but im not sure if its suppose to have wood grain on the doors, right now it doesent. I believe that the seat belongs in a Cheyenne super am I right?

Beautiful truck. I agree, I'm pretty sure the Super got woodgrain.

Re: My dream truck

Nice looking truck! The truck has cheyenne badging but the glovebox door lists as custom deluxe. (custome being spelled wrong) Also notice it reads heavy duty clutch, but has an auto trans in it. Without knowing the history, it is hard to say.
To answer your question, a cheyenne would have woodgrain door panels. I am not sure if yours is a cheyenne however.

Re: My dream truck

The truck was also a factory 6 cylinder from the vin. Id say however that the upgrades have added significant value to it. To make it a Cheyenne clone, it would need the woodgrain door panel inserts. Also a headliner if it doesn't have one(a custom deluxe would not have had one from factory). Sweet truck!

Re: My dream truck

Didn't notice the S in the VIN. Yes the truck was an original 6 cyl. It's not a real Super but that doesn't mean you can't make it into one. Regardless it's a beautiful teuck.

Re: My dream truck

Ok so it doesn't have a headliner ether. now I don't know what I want to do. To make it a custom deluxe witch is what it seems to be, what do I all have to change, the badges and seat? or more?

Or on the other hand should I make it a Cheyenne clone and add the wood grain and headliner?

Re: My dream truck

Up to you how you want to build it. Mine is a '72 3/4 ton, converted to 5 lugs and SWB, but still wearing Custom/20 badges.

Beautiful truck! I love that color combo... One of my favorites.

Re: My dream truck

It sounds like you want it factory stock, is that correct? If that is the case, the seat cover would need to be changed to an all vinyl style, there most likely would not be woodgrain anywhere on the truck, rims would be white steel wheels, tires would need to be changed, and swap in a 6 cyl. Your truck is worth the equivalent value that it would be if you were to swap everything. I think it looks better as is but it's your dream truck, make it what you wish!

Re: My dream truck

well I do like originality but it does look better the way it is now then what it should look like. I might add the stuff to make it look like a Cheyenne but for now its staying the way it is.

Thanks for all the help.

Re: My dream truck

Id say leave it as is or just add the door panel woodgrain. Its a sweet truck the way it is. I wouldn't go through the trouble of putting it back

Re: My dream truck

It is a Custom Deluxe, and a nice ol truck. PO attempted to make it look like a Cheyenne by putting on the emblems and woodgrain lower trim, and sounds like he wasn't up front with you. Da Bum. The way I see it, you've got two options:

If you want it stock:
Swap on the correct Custom and Deluxe emblems on the fenders. You'll need to drill for the deluxe emblems below the Custom. Keep in mind, it is always "left justified" with the Custom (except for some of the Janesville Trucks, which were centered on occasion), NOT always rearward or forward on both fenders. Then to make it completely correct, trim-wise, you would need the correct Custom Deluxe Cloth and Vinyl seat cover (not an all-vinyl one as mentioned above - the vinyl with scrollwork was a Cheyenne trim-level thing, the plain vinyl was a Custom trim-level thing) and a padded rubber floor mat. Note that your truck was also ordered with PO1 full wheel covers.

OR

If you're gonna clone it, then go all the way, drill those same holes, but stick in the Super emblems. Add woodgrain door panels, instrument cluster housing, and aluminum tin and woodgrain on the glovebox, and the correct chrome tailgate handle. And headliner... And so on and so on. This would end up being a rather expensive proposition, and a painful one in some respects - and you'd still have a Custom Deluxe that looks like a Cheyenne Super. And that's ok, if YOU'RE ok with it.

One note, you're not saving any money by using the seat cover if you opt to go the Cheyenne Super route - the current seat cover was never available from the factory - what you have is a Super "style" cover, but the real Supers only had Parchment, Blue, or Olive "Custom Cloth" i.e. houndstooth seat covers. There was never a black (vinyl part) houndstooth seat cover made by the factory.

You could make it a Cheyenne clone by adding the correct door panel woodgrains - that may be the overall least expensive approach at this point - and just skip the headliner.

Bottom line - If you really want it correct, I'd do the first option and leave the V8 anyway. It will get more expensive to make it a Cheyenne Super and add some level of pain (the nubs aren't present for the headliner, for example).

Or, if you want to "fake" it - maybe make it something altogether different: a white/red/white/red swb highlander! Highlander is a mid-year trim and/or option bundle savings package that was only available on a Custom Deluxe trim level. A Custom Deluxe with plaid seat cover, sort of. Mmmm..... THAT would be sweet - and you'd have a correct trim-level truck (i.e. Custom Deluxe) and the only thing you'd be "fudging" would be something that was actually available on the Custom Deluxe: plaid trim (in blue, gray, avocado, or orange plaid - an orange one is pictured below - most white/red trucks had either the gray or orange plaid). AND, NOTE! that the interior trim color is not called out on your SPID.... so perhaps it would be quite correct to install plaid. Ok, that's a stretch, but, as you can see, I'm a Highlander fanatic.

Below are a few pics to explain the trim levels and some Highlander info and a PO1 full wheel cover.

Great truck - you CAN'T go wrong in either direction - but you sound like a purist, I kinda am too, I guess - I love the Supers, but I have a hard time cloning... So I drive my custom deluxe with a big smile (and it's a Highlander, in case you're wondering...)

One final note - the Red interior pic below (from the brochures) is EXACTLY what your interior should look like. As you can see, the only anomalies in your current arrangement are the seat cover and the carpet addition and the addition of Cheyenne and above level bright trim on the pedals.

Re: My dream truck

I also have a hard time cloning, but since someone already tried I may as well finnish it by adding the wood grain door panels. I don't want to go through all the work of changing it back to a custom deluxe nor do I want to make it a super. plus I just replaced all the wood grain molding witch I thought was correct to the truck because the old ones where all beat up and the chrome was all worn off so I thought they where original. one more question how much work is it to put a headliner in?

Re: My dream truck

this Brothers tech article should give you an idea. http://www.brotherstrucks.com/techar...20INSTALLATION

Rather involved process. Slots need to be cut in the cab inner roof... Or perhaps just glue it up and then screw in the trim. If you search on this site, several different threads. I'd think it would be less expensive to go back to custom deluxe than to finish the Cheyenne stuff. Either leave the woodgrain lower trim or buy the black tape for the center of it(?) Sorry, not much help. It's a beautiful truck, and you're good to go no matter what you choose.

Does the VIN listed on the SPID match the VIN on the door jamb plate?

Good call on the seat Jocko. To my knowledge there isn't a custom deluxe cloth/vinyl seat manufactured right? I suppose SMS would be the best place for the upholstery.
